Low-fat diets lose luster

Thu Feb 9, 6:48 AM ET

Alas, it seems there's no quick, sure way to lose weight and ensure good health - no matter how carefully you follow the latest advice. Sometimes, each new study seems to contradict a previous one.

Not long ago, it was generally estimated that 400,000 Americans a year die from obesity. Oops. A new study last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that obesity accounts for only 26,000 deaths, and that a few extra pounds might add to longevity.

Similarly, hormone replacement therapy was once thought to protect postmenopausal women against heart attack or stroke. Subsequent studies say it doesn't.

Yesterday's conventional wisdom is today's myth. No wonder so many are skeptical about whether any study can be believed.

The latest surprising finding is that low-fat diets don't reduce the rate of heart disease, stroke, breast cancer or colorectal cancer, or even result in greater weight loss. That's the conclusion of a government-sponsored study published Wednesday in the

Journal of the American Medical Association. It followed nearly 50,000 overweight, postmenopausal women for an average of eight years.

The finding appears to overturn long-held ideas. Decades ago, researchers noticed that cancer rates were lower in Third World countries, and they theorized that the difference could be attributed to low-fat, high-fiber diets. A succession of studies supported that idea. As the public bought in, low-fat diets reached fad status. The market responded, and their promoters became media stars.

Now that belief is at least in doubt. But before you begin scarfing down Krispy Kremes, keep in mind that every study has limitations. This one got attention because it is a long-term study of an unusually large group. But not a particularly diverse group. It remains to be learned whether the same effects would be seen in younger women or in men.

The low-fat study only means that there's no magic bullet, which leaves an obvious if unpleasant fact: Good health comes from a balanced diet, frequent exercise and avoiding obvious risks. Family history and genes count for a lot also, regardless of diet.

So eat less, eat better, don't smoke and exercise regularly. There's nothing terribly revolutionary about those ideas, nor is new research likely to remove them from the category of conventional wisdom. All they take is willpower, and not pinning hopes to the newest fad.

Jeez! It is not rocket science. I have never understood why most people won't face facts about this whole subject.

Obesity, in general, was never a general problem until several things happened. The first is that the food supply became more processed than ever before (think fast foods for one). Two, most people in the labor force no longer did much manual labor. Three, most people don't understand that their metabolism changes as they get older and they should eat less. Lastly (not necessarily the last reason...one can keep going), people for the most part refuse to accept their personal responsibilities for their lives. The proof as they say is "in the pudding". Give me one example anywhere in world history that most of the people (I'm not just talking about the leaders or upper classes either) were fat say 50 or more years ago. Zitch, nada, zip...I rest my case.

*eating fried chickens*

Most diets fail because people don't stick to them. It's been proven that cutting one's overall calories does work, and it really doesn't matter how that is done. But, NOTHING is going to work long term unless you combine a well balanced diet with exercise. You can eat a low fat diet, low carb diet, all cabbage diet, all fruit diet, and NONE of this will work long term unless you get moving!

One other thing. Going on a diet doesnt necessarily mean going on a diet to lose weight. I remember a few years back, me and two guy friends of mine were quite into the gym scene. We adorned our walls with pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu. So we ate a protein-rich diet that was aimed towards building muscle.

You have to be in good health constantly to grow muscle too, since the minute you get sick, your body takes away resources and invests them in healing instead. Therefore you have to eat consistently healthy. Fitness and nutrition pros always say drink water. They always say avoid processed foods. In fact, they give you some pretty rigorous eating rules to make sure you're fit and healthy. Only AFTER you are healthy can you start to shed fat in the right way or build muscle.

While I think we all turned out quite well and attractively fit, none of us ever became big hulking masses of testosterone with biceps fifty yards in circumference. I think it's actually a good thing we didn't. ;) No fun in thick neck syndrome, eh?

"Diet" itself can mean a lot of things.

Those people failed diet because they were not smart with foods.

That is because most people don't pay attention to Sodium intake (Salt). Most people with weight issues really have problem with salt more than fat itself! There are two different kinds of overweight which I believe is FAT and BLOATED. When person really have issue with too much fat in their body, they need to pay attention to fat intake, on other hand those who really are bloated needs to pay attention to salt intake! Majority of people who have overweight issues really is bloated rather than fat. That is why most diet products fails, look at the amount of salt in diet food product, you'd be shocked. Cheri ended up in emergency room two nights ago! After dr examined her and that Dr said the only problem dr is conerned about Cheri is that she smokes! Cheri asked him why she got dizzy, chest hurts and other symptoms. Dr said, "well you got very high sodium in your body and since you drink alot water and that is very good start. Because salt has the ability to hold water inside your body. It will take time to get rid of excess salt from your body". Also, that Cheri's body is very confused about the change in diet, and need time to adjust to new diet. Even Dr told Cheri to keep on that track, Cheri gulped.
So majority of you really need to pay attention to salt, and drink as much water as you can. It is the cheapest way to lose weight, and don't expect it to work outright. It DOES take time to get where you'd want to be.

Well I can eat right food most of the time, but reason why diet didn't work for me because I sit around the house all day and not go outside and do some activity and plus I have no job to keep me on my feet everyday.

I agreed with you, DHB. I am now more careful what to buy at grocery store...if high salt, I won't buy it....now I am not gonna buy any boxed or canned. ICK!

Yes, I do not believe in any food diets especially a label that says a low fat or 1% or 2%. It's all BS.

It is more important to do the right thing by exercise, eating the right food, and always read the ingredients and compare other brands before you buy the food. The detox is a good way to go.

Your bleeding nose may cause blood thinner - I don't know, but I heard that drinking distilled water causes your veins and arteries to get like a sandpaper which cause plak build-up. I used to think that distilled water was best. I think that regular water is best.

I guess I gotta look up the difference between distilled, mineral, or regular water.

Cause I don't know what is in those water.

Why they called it distilled? Did they put alcohol in it? :dunno:
