For the first time in my life, and I am in my mid- 50ties,
I got a pixie haircut that showcases my HAs.

I am semi-conscious about them, but, eh.. gotta do it some time,
no? meaning, go for a short cut, not be afraid to show your hearing aids, finally.

Good for you!...I did the same thing....(due to so many surgeries, big holes, scar tissue & a left ear that is flat against my head, looking totally different from the right)....just can't stand the hair around my face all the time...so now I wear it all back into a pony tail or a "twist"....Got to the point to where I didn't give a shyt about what other people thought....:giggle:...sort of a good conversation piece too!...:roll:
 
My first HA was one of boxy thing that I had to wear under my dress and it looked like I had on square boob when I was about 8 yo . I got over wearing a HA very early.

I remember those. My mother had to make special harness to hold it in because they didn't sell those things to hold the box-type hearing aids. I have some pictures of me with those cords sticking out of my ear down to my chest. I cringe when I see those old pictures. So glad they came out with behind the hear after that.

OMG ! I hated that damn harnesses , my came with my boxy HA and it was white and I hated having a gray wire running down my neck . I am so glad there is no photos of me wearing mine. I was so excited when the telephones came with a volume control for HOH people.
 
eek! I had the white harness too- cloth. One pair was modified a bit so it was easier to take off in the summer time. My wires were tan. :P Wore the thing for 10 years before I finally got BTEs when I was in 6th grade at around 11/12 years old. Sad thing is my mother still has the 'box' hearing aid and at least one harness lol.

I still have one from childhood, complete with the case. :lol:
 
I wore those in the 1980's and 1990's, and it was humiliating. I put up with it until one day in school I said I'd had enough, and this was late in the school year, mind you-- they tried to force me to keep wearing it, but I pointed out that looking more normal was my goal, and they shut up after that, and did not try again.

For me or them? Their shutting up worked plenty well for me, until they were idiotic enough to go and buy a completely brand-new system, which I objected to, but what I didn't know then was that I wouldn't be wearing it for long-- just a few months before I moved to this region.
 
yep, these box HA were a PITA. (pain in the...)

but the harness, the harness was something else. I am like, nobody heard of sewing on
a good ol' simple inconspicuous pocket with a button or a part-way zipper
to close it up for security?

Fuzzy...I'm sure your new hair cut looks amazing. Hey, show us a picture:)

My hair is finally long again. I have blonde hair and my CI is beige. It blends in and no one can see it. I think it would actually be easier if people knew I can not hear.

That's a Catch 22, Angel....:hmm:...even I had to bite my tongue today when one of my neighbors said..."I know you're hearing impaired"....then started "explaining" something to me...that even a 12 year old would know....:roll:...I do try my best tho' to be "nice"...but sometimes it gets to be too much and I just withdraw for awhile....:wave:

I know exactly what you mean. Friday when I went to my doctors appointment there was a new nurse. I guess she read my file that I am deaf. She was ignoring me and talking to my hubby. When I said something she looked like she had seen a ghost or something. Then she said the dreaded "OMG I thought you were deaf". Ticked me off and yes it raised my BP for my checkup.

I have to withdraw too, sometimes it's just all too difficult. You're a trooper though and I admire your strength.

It's all too common. Anytime a deaf person is with a hearing person, people will talk to the hearing person that's with you and ignore you. I get that all the time when I'm with my sons. They talk to them instead of me even though I'm the adult here! When I had my kids, I vowed not to use them at all whenever I'm talking to hearing people. They weren't born to be my interpreters and never will be.
