Life After a Child’s Diagnosis

I said they don't think I am an idiot. I did not say they know all aspects of deafness.

Respecting people is key and not judging for some difference.
Exactly. My son's pediatrician knew very little about deafness. The difference between him and the average physician is that he was willing to admit his ignorance and was more than willing to learn...especially the cultural aspects.

Yes , that is the kind of person one always hopes to find.

You all also have to remember. This is a parent that does not fully understand that a person can come to acceptance. This is a person that is honestly expressing their feelings, and is totally unaware of how much deaf people can do. Ignorant to the facts. Instead of bashing them... Teach them. :)

Great point Babyblue, ignorance plays a huge role in situations like this!

 Most doctors are just as in the dark about the abilities of deaf people as the general population. If anything, most doctors are even more in the dark about the sociolinguistic aspects of deafness because they're so trained to see deafness (and any other disability) as an illness and nothing more.

Nailed that one on the head! Parents AND Doctors need to be educated on this! I wish parents were to be exposed to advocates for both sides. Then parents could make an fully educated decision.

I applaud the doctor's that have educated themselves!! :yesway:
