Lesbian sgt. discharged after police tell military

You really need to shut up, put up, and wait until the details are released. There's a lot of people out there that unaware they're living with a felon. I means right now, I got a roommate said she doesn't do drugs, yet I find traces of pot around the house; I also had a friend, who was going to be my roommate two years ago, who got busted for social security fraud; didn't know about it until the police showed up at his house. This case got nothing to do with whether or not it's a security risk. It's about her sexuality.

They could had said roommate which would possess just as much as a threat to security of a military base as a husband, a wife or any relatives would.

Bingo. And no matter what one knows or doesn't know, it is wrong for them to have disclosed her sexual orientation. PERIOD.

It's not wrong if you really understood whats going on-those of you who say it's wrong shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

I will give you an example which probably applied here. She probably had a top secret or secret clearance which is given to an airmen only after an extensive background check. You are also briefed on the conditions of being granted this responsibility which includes associating with a known felon.

She knew this and tried to keep it hidden which makes her a liar and therefore no longer trustworthy enough to keep the clearance. When you can no longer have a clearance(which is only given to you if your job requires it), then you can no longer do your job. if you can no longer do your job-why would they keep you?

The military did her a favor by using the "dont ask dont tell" to discharge her. This allowed them to give her an honorable, had they used the real reason which is,could not meet job "requirements" it would have been a dishonorable or other than honorable conditions.

What does one's sexual orienation have to do with one's ability to do the job?

It doesn't....but a spouse with warrants is something the military would want to know about....gay or straight. After all a spouse is more of a connection than a roommate. Was she an innocent spouse or a complicit spouse?

Agreed. That information should be known. Just leave sexual orientation out of it.

Right so it is wrong to focus on the issue of one's sexual orienation.

Point proven, I had no idea my ex-husband was a felon until after he split up. He ended up going back to ADC for an additional 18mos-2years. Perfectly good reason why he never showed up at divorce court and a damn good place for him to have been. He told me he had a couple of misdemeanors stemming from youthful stupidity, this I could understand. But, again, I had no idea he was a felon. How we found out was when he filed the false police report and the county cops came back for questioning about the report. They told me they found the firearm in a pawn shop, the ticket was under his name, and he had a felony on his record. They were wondering if I knew anything about it, which I did not. I more than happily complied with their investigation into the matter.

It was an arrest warrant because she was wanted on charges. That does not make her guilty. Conviction in a court makes her guilty.

Lack of cooperation does not exactly sound as though she were resisting arrest.

Sounds to me the police may have been a bit over zealous, or perhaps anti-gay.

Not sure how you could get that from the story. It's pretty typical for law enforcement to contact a homeowner when they are serving a warrant on a home. When the homeowner refuses to cooperate it usually sends up a red flag.....gay or straight.

So if some police want to search my home I am to run home from work?

Like they are going to write me an excuse like a doctor does so I won't have an unexcused absence on my record -- Not to mention even a doctor's excuse does no refund me the money I am down for the time I did not work.

Yep, sends up a red flag to me... why isn't she on welfare like any other honest citizen who can drop every thing and run home when called.

Far as I'm concerned they can wait till I get home from work.

Ex-staff sgt. says police told AF she was gay - Air Force News, news from Iraq - Air Force Times

Police officers, who said they spotted the marriage license on the kitchen table through a window of Newsome’s home, alerted the base, police Chief Steve Allender said in a statement sent to AP. The license was relevant to the investigation because it showed both the relationship and residency of the two women, he said.

It’s an emotional issue and it’s unfortunate that Newsome lost her job, but I disagree with the notion that our department might be expected to ignore the license, or not document the license, or withhold it from the Air Force once we did know about it,” Allender said Saturday. “It was a part of the case, part of the report and the Air Force was privileged to the information.”

He said his department does not seek to expose gay military personnel or investigate the sexuality of Rapid City residents.

Allender said the department was finishing its internal investigation and has determined the officers acted appropriately. They have not been placed on leave during the investigation.

Newsome’s partner is currently out on bail on one felony and three misdemeanor counts of theft stemming from an incident last year, court officials in Fairbanks said. More information was not immediately available, and Newsome said she didn’t know the status of the case and didn’t provide more details about it.

Woa, someone get a bad nights sleep? I know more about this than you do and I know how the Air Force thinks-I retired two years ago and with a Top Secret Clearance. And to the military it is in fact a security risk-but hey, what do I know.

Should you really disclose the fact that you had a top secret clearance here on a public forum?

Doesn't make it right.

Well, the military is an Anarchy type society-you are owned by Uncle Sam. The local authorities have an obligation to report these things to the military, why, because it may be out of their juristiction and the military Police and military law may need to be involved. Military law and Local, State law enforcement get the job done because they work together. You should always know who you bed with at night.

There are som many other variables that are involved which the news article can't possibly touch on.
