I'm looking to upgrade my mother's TDD. It is older and only displays one line of text at a time. Her vision is also fading, and I don't want her to strain her eye any more than she has to. So, I'm interested in looking for a "large print" device, probably something more like a computer monitor.

I plan to test my Google Fu, but I wanted to see if there were any firsthand testimonies available. I'm not sure where to go to buy one (Best Buy?), so I'll probably just purchase one online.

I'd welcome any suggestions and/or warnings.

Did you check with your state agencies first? She should be eligible for a free one, updated to meet her vision challenges.

TED program are free to Deaf/Hoh/Deafblind ppls..

I haven't used on my TTY with LVD box for long time, mostly use VP and emails,, rarely on the TTY with LVD box for emergencies.

Check with the state/provincial agencies etc first (including sometimes the phone company). Your/her audie should be able to help you get in contact with the "right people".

You can't get TTYs at places like bestbuy or standard retail places (bestbuy, source, futureshop or other electronics/phone/tv /communication place etc ...because TTYs are too "specialized" to be carried by people who know nothing about them (ie the Bestbuy people - who don't even "get" that CC doesn't work via HDMI).
You can order TTYs through various government hoh/D agencies, many phone companies, some Audies and online from the major TTY manufacturers if needed (look into how you'd be reimbursed for the cost using some of these options though!!)

Places like those below will let you look at various models available so that you can work with the appropriate people to get the unit that is right for your mom. You may HAVE to go through the government agency to get the unit for free/large discount, or you may be able to select from any "approved device" (ie a brand name TTY) and then be reimbursed for it ... every place is a bit different for rules.

Some reputable websites that are helpful and have a good selection are:

UltraTec
United TTY
HarrisCommunications
