I have been looking for solution to my laptop's problem for long while. I have been searching through Google to find best software to "force" my laptop to go on suspend or hibernate mode even if programs are still running. It's frustrating because no matter how I come up some wordings to find particular problems, I only found few software downloads but it still doesn't help on my laptop..

If Laptop or PC have fresh installed XP, it would works just fine (my laptop did when it was freshly installed). Until over the time when you install softwares and games ect (adding programs). It won't go on "sleep". I set the Power options , Monitor off 20 min, Hard disk 30 min, Standby 2hrs, Hibernate 3hrs. The problem is that Monitor did turn off after 20 min but hard drive and rest of other options just won't turn off. My laptop been running all night when it's not been touched or used..

What I wanted is to force XP to sleep regardless if program been running or not, None of us in family household planned to run program overnight. After it had been used, we just left it alone for the night (once in a while, kids left browser or one of the program running even if they finished using it). I couldn't find any programs running background which cause hard drive to keep running. Every morning, laptop's hard drive area is very warm to the touch.

I wish M$ should have opton in Power setting "Force Standby or Hibernate" to preserve hard drive and hardware lifespan.

Linux been very good to me and it just force to hibernate whenever the certain set time even the program(s) are still running. It went to hibernate mode no matter what. I hit the power button, it boots right into desktop in less than 15 sec with program still running. System's harddrive and all of its hardware is cold to touch after waking up from hibernation. That's what I wanted on M$ but Linux don't work well on my laptop anyway.

Bottom line, I just hate M$ for weak, "gullible" power option, if one or more program (including any programs running on background or hidden) runs, it stays on and just won't go on Standby or Hibernate mode even hard drive won't turn off.

I need your suggestions and link to software that can "force" XP just shutup and go sleep!!

Yes, XP is common known for that problem!

My other computer (XP) has the same problem returning after reformatting it several months ago, and looked for a solution where I once found and fixed it few years ago... it worked great. But I need to look for it to fix the "bug".... if you or I find it, then post the links... I want it fixed, too. I recalled I found it via Google then M$... I'm quite busy today.

Ok no problem. No hurry. Clean install tend to work better but It's a hassle once you accumulate softwares and plugins ect plus kids download and installed something that you don't know that cause problem with XP's Power management. It's a pain to fix it.

My laptop can be manually hibernate if I use FN+F4 and it works fine.

I prefer automatic so that I don't have to be the last person to hibernate the laptop.

Have you checked under your power saving options?

That I did but still. Just need to search for an update to fix a small bug that will fix it for those XP computers that have the same problem... someday I will get to it. I'm sure Catty knew about it already?!

Won't wake up from Standby or Hibernation

Be patient. Some PCs take up to 30 seconds to wake up.
Look for a Suspend or Hibernate key. Some laptops have special keys or buttons for one or both, but the user might not have noticed them if he normally uses some other wake-up method.
Try pressing and holding the PC’s power button for five seconds or more. On a PC that's configured to Suspend or Hibernate with a press of the power button, holding down the power button will usually reset and reboot it.
Most laptops have an [Fn] key you can press in conjunction with other keys to control laptop-specific features, including power management.
As a last resort, remove all batteries, wait a few minutes, and then replace the batteries.

My 5 years old Acer had exactly same problem with that. Nothing we can do it. Only way to update to Windows 7 or Linux to solve the problem..

Agreed with that. My brother just got brand new toshiba laptop with XP; still issue with sleep mode.

Simply just close the laptop.

It done cause problem with sleep mode like happen to us before.

Remember it issue for Windows XP ONLY.

My brother already waiting for more than five minutes from sleep mode? How to be patient? It's bad!

I am happy with my macbook and only few seconds from sleep.

Apple ROCKS!

I already did and it won't help at all. It's XP bug issue.

I planned to reformat my laptop and reinstall everything cuz I have Trojan virus. Grrr!! Trojan have nothing to do with affecting power options anyway. I had problem with it before Trojan hit.

Just reinstall XP and now it's zippy and sleep mode is working. I will plan to use Acronis True Image to copy image of drive to backup so If there's a problem then I would be able to fix it quickly.
