Hey peeps,
I got other question..... I'm hoping to get a laptop next month sometimes... If I'm using wireless internet, will webcam work, when I hook webcam up with laptop that have wireless... So it doesn't need phone line or cable to make webcam work, for example if I'm at capitol, I want to chat with friends using camfrog or yahoo webcam, not VRS to communcation if I get too bored and my dad busy.... I hope my question is clear enuff...

Well, those with built in wireless is really LAN not WAN*. To be able to roam anywhere where there is wireless service, you need to buy seperate wireless card though carrier like Tmobile, Sprint, etc and pay monthly fee so you can roam anywhere. Those with built wireless in lappy requires wireless access point at your house, like wireless router. You would get better webcam quality at your home or where there is access point. But though the wireless carrier like Tmo, you won't get as good quality (Equals to dial-ups quality). There is one exception for Tmobile, if you notice at Starbucks or place that have "Hot spot" logo, then that is where you would get much faster connection, at additional charge.

I encourage y'all get AMD 64!!! because this will work much better with next version of Windows using true 64 bit platform. Intel don't offer 64 bits platform on residential and commercial PC yet (Still 32 bit platform). Just server, sorry about it.

*LAN means Local Area Networking, WAN = Wide Area Networking BIG difference between these type of networking.

YEAH, I second that!

racheleggert, i had Laptop, i sometime using wireless internet via laptop. I have no problem with it at all.. I never try to put webcam on laptop with wireless.. I believe that it should work. as concept: wireless phone has webcam.. That mean webcam will work on laptop through wireless internet for guarantee!

DHB's encourage you getting AMD 64. I highly recommending you get Laptop with AMD 64. If you weren't sure about AMD 64. ~~> Click here to learn more <~~

AMD 64 ROCK!!!!

Yes, I have AMD, wireless laptop. Love it!

<---AMD Athlon 64 fan since I bought my laptop last March. However I havent tried webcam on wifi but I have wifi built into my laptop so I dont have to mess with wireless cards.

I havent taken the laptop to a wifi spot since last June when I permanently hooked it up to the Charter Pipeline cablemodem, but when I m away, the Net is just a wifi hotspot away....

Im not sure about seriousness in America side, but apparently it seems that way. Europe busted Intel for marketing fixation with Intel's products. What it means is that Intel forced computer manufacturers only sell Intel based computer. What a FILTHY business is Intel! I can understand why Intel is doing this, it is because Intel have NOT had 64 bit archieture yet, and AMD is already way ahead of Intel. Because of AMD advancement, it makes Intel very nervous about losing business to AMD. PFFFFT, Intel SUCKS!!! AMD ROCKS! I am having hard time finding AMD PC off from shelves! Dell don't sell AMD, WTF? Gateway, they hide the AMD PC making it harder for customer to find it. Yes Gateway does make it, but not advertising at all. I don't like Compaq, and I end up bough HP with AMD Athlon 64, bus speed going twice faster than fastest Intel based PC!!!

Intel Inside :rl:

DHB65, You make me :( Ha Ha Jk :P ... I don't really care of what you dislike that product of compaq.. You knew it that Hp and Compaq are same production.

Okay, anyway, I recently bought that Super-Compaq R4000 laptop with AMD Athlon 64 as chosen one over HP laptop, :naughty: .... I really feeling more comfort and truly happy with compaq laptop without being regrets the decision I made.... I have no problem with compaq for about 2 or 3 months. Compaq's very improvement system and programs.. Trust me! :D

Compaq R4000 is now POPULAR and TOP SELLING EVER!

DHB65, Perhap you know or not that HP had new hp laptop cloned from Original Compaq feature designs.. Look at below:

l2000_400.jpg

and

Compaq Laptop:

R4000chassis_400.jpg

Now you see that Hp and Compaq are the exact same product and designs.. Just different names that is all.. :)

DAMN Ck, that HP one is the Lance Edition! I only found out a short while ago HP was making a limited Lance Armstrong edition of their laptops with $50 from every Lance edition going to Lance's cancer foundation.

CK, if u ever get your hands on a Lance edition of the HP laptop computer....Hold on to it for it will be sure hell of a collector's item sometime in the futire!

I know HP bought Compaq last year. STUPID STUPID! However I still go for HP than Compaq!

Compaq Vesus Hp?!?! or Both are common?!?!

sablescort, Yes, You are right that HP Laptop of Special edition. the site and image I gave that proved Hp and Compaq are common production and designs.

I found another HP had new laptop called desktop replacment as cloned from original Compaq desktop replacment, Look below:

HP LAPTOP:

DHB65, I didn't say or critize on you are wrong the infomation that HP bought Compaq last year..

I was aware of Hp bought compaq in about 2003, not last year.. in Late 2002, I remembered I went one of stores, who infomed me that Compaq went bankrupt!

Anyway, it is important that you feeling comfort with HP laptop and product as well as I feeling more comfort with Compaq Laptop.

Isn't that solution and Super-cool!?

What the hell? Back on topic.....

Here's the straight dope:

Are you asking to use the "wireless" almost anywhere, or are you talking about going to places where they provide wireless internet access like coffee shops or if the capitol provides wifi access? Those are two VASTLY different issues here, and you need to talk to us to give us more information.

1) Wireless "almost anywhere" means having an aircard or something that uses cellular signal. Very slow, costly, you pay per month and per minute or per megabyte of data -- the only thing positive about it is that you should expect to have coverage anywhere you get a cell signal. SHOULD. Not guaranteed. Service isn't fast enough for video cameras, in my opinion.

2) Wireless cards, or "wifi" where you have a 802.11a/b/g/whatever card you put into your laptop that connects to a local wireless network. Sometimes those networks are free (maybe the capitol provides free wifi to staff), others you have to pay an access fee for a limited time (the hotels I stay at charge $9.95 a night) others you can subscribe to (T-Mobile HotSpot in places like Starbucks charges $11.95 a month or something). It's NOT EVERYWHERE service -- you have to be within 10 to 30 meters of a signal, usually within a building, for it to work. However, the service is usually much cheaper overall and much faster.

We have to assume that your wireless connection is reliable i.e., you're using an 802.11a/b/g/whatever connection and your wireless signal is strong enough and stable enough to transmit without packet errors; make sure your signal isn't cutting out or dropping or otherwise unreliable: that will screw up any video connection you attempt to make.

If that's the case, then you have to make sure that the firewall on the wireless connection does NOT BLOCK H.323 video (ports 1720 TCP, 15328-15333 TCP and UDP, and 389 TCP and other requirements as necessary for your program, camfrog may be different).

The firewall may only be between the wireless connection and the rest of the internet. It may be possible, for example, for you to video chat with anyone in the same building or another person with a wireless card to the SAME wireless network. But it may not be possible to video chat if the firewalls between you and the person you want to chat with are up.

To give a better example:

Let's say you are in a internet coffee shop. Most of them are pretty open, allow anything to go, at the expense that you may be open to viruses and other port vulnerabilities. There's a VERY GOOD chance you can video to another friend who is at home and has their VP set up to receive calls.

Now let's say you're at the Capitol. Let's say the Capitol has a private wireless network for legislators and their staff (does it? Can you find out? Can you set one up?). You have access to it. You connect to it on your laptop. The tech staff that run that wireless network have a firewall to prevent any unauthorized sniffing on congressmen and staff computers. Therefore, the only thing you can do on that wireless network is send email and surf the 'net. No video, no games, no FTP, nothing. MAYBE.

Best thing to do? Tell us what networks you're planning on accessing. If any of them are secure or protected, chances are you'll need to contact their tech people and find out if you can get an exception for video conferencing. Tell them it's for accessibility because you communicate via sign language.

What I do? I have a home wireless network. I go to Panera Bread Company (free wifi if you buy something from their menu). St. Louis has free municipal wifi all over downtown -- you can be pretty much anywhere and still get a signal. I use wifi (#2 of what I listed above) not cellular / aircard (#1 listed above)

Everyone else in this thread was giving you bad information -- misleading info, LAN vs WAN vs aircard, AMD64 (that's a operating system processor, not a wireless device!).

Dennis, WHOOOA!! Would you relax and eazy it, dude!, You don't?

I aware that little off-topic I brought this which is not belong to. Is that my cause or what? WHO CARES! You can't blame other people's little off-topic for their reasons. as example DHB65's encoruaged about getting AMD, etc.. that is not misinforations gave out..

Anyway, stop whine! [SIGH*]

I let people get back on topic about laptop, wireless internet, and webcam for racheleggert's sake I actually respect that!

I agreed, I don't see how I can go off topic, because you said your planning to get a lappy next month, so I thought of throwing in a good recommendation based on my research and experience, along with wireless explaination.

Umm.. We still use 32bits. Too many hardware's driver still use 32bits and hard to find 64bits driver for hardware, mobile, and device (digital camera, printer, scanner, etc..) 64bits is pointless for RIGHT NOW. How sad Mac already ready 64bits for long time and work everything with device, hardware, etc..

You have no idea how many type of Intel we have.
Question... What do you think of Sempron? It's suck so that mean AMD sucks? I don't think so.

Please get FACT before you said that.

Laptop with Amd64? That's awful idea and eat battery life so quick.
Laptop with Intel M so it run great and battery life almost 6 hours!

I see Intel P4 3.2 GHZ vs Intel M 1.7 GHZ for graphic art and games. so guess what? Intel M won. Intel M and Amd64 are almost same speed for that.

Thanks god I have laptop with Intel M so enjoy watch dvd movie and study some test in Reader so battery life 6 hours during fly from Europe to Chicago in 10 hours. If you want AMD64 then it up to 2-3 hours for that.

I hate people who BIG FAN.

I have AMD64bit 3800+ 2.4 GHZ for my desktop and Intel M 1.6 GHZ for my laptop.
