Landline telephone - never use it anymore...

Hello folks,

Since I have my cell phones and frequently use them, I now recognize that I never use my Verizon landline phone line here for many months. Should I discontinue it or downgrade it at minimum service for emergency or fax use?

Just cut it off to save money. We saved a lot since we cut our landphone. 911 still free and still work. It is by the law, that 911 has to be work and free, period. It is your choice.
 
I'm sure happier with cellular phone texting than I ever was with Montana Relay. It was better than TTY/DDY, and the operators where great, but answering machines and other technical difficulties made things hard.

Now I have to move to a part of Oregon (only 20 miles, if you can believe it) where cell phones have poor reception, and may have to sign up for Oregon Relay on the existing landline.

Not really happy about taking a step back.
 
everybody are still use "landline telephone" from cable.

yet, 911 over telephone is strong suggest to have one.
 
I got rid of my landline and got digital line. Save me alot of money. I save more then 1/2 of the cost. I need that digital phone since my son use it to call his friend. It help. and free cost of long distance. :D

Cancel the service unless you need tty. Vrs is a better option as is cell phones.
 
There is a new Captel Phone model which is under current beta testing that will work with VoIP service. I wouldn't be suprised if they start selling them late this year.

There is also the WebCapTel. I use it a lot and it's great! (You talk on the phone and read the captions on your computer monitor, no more CapTel phone needed.) You can use a sidekick or other cell phone with it so a landline wouldn't be needed.
 
I have Comcast with High speed and cable that s all.. I have blackberry! yes cut it and save money! :)
 
Right. However, CAPTEL phone itself is ideal for locations without computer (ie. in Living room, kitchen etc).

There are too many new technology methods for deaf coming out every few months (not necessary a bad thing for us) but only one thing I am still waiting is VRS VCO for mobile phone using EVDO Rev-A data service but unforunately closest is laptop with webcam and aircard right now.. I would loved to have VRS in SMALL phone which I can put it in my pocket and take it everywhere where EVDO is availible.

I guess it depends on what you use it for and what's included.

Some companies have the phone as part of the deal with cable, etc. If that's the case, I guess you could leave it all together.

If I got my own apartment, I wouldn't bother getting a land line. I already have a cell phone and I'm satisfied with it. :)
 
I have not had landline for over 8 years since I get free unlimited voice/data cell phones (5 of them) as I works in Wireless Network Operations for past 11 years.

I use CellSocket (company went out business) and NTalk (Phonelabs - Dock N Talk, Universal cell phone Docking Station, cable and bluetooth enabled connection) to connect with cell phone to give me "dial-tone" to desktop telephone. Work great.

But, ever since I first got CapTel 200 few years ago, it was useless on Docked cell phone or VoIP (Vonage - Only used for one month for testing). I gave up using Captel and started using VP100/VP200 as VCO service which I loves it and faster than Captel.

With recent technology advancements with wireless data service (EVDO Rev A) which made upload speed much faster than Rev 0 and VRS via cell service is very much possible now. I am hoping to see one of VRS company comes up with mobile VRS very soon. VPAD seem interesting but its only support WiFi, not cellular and pad is too large to be carrying around. Unforunately, EVDO data is pretty much limited within major cities.

Even if your old cell phone is out of service, you can still keep it plugged in for 911 calls since they are required to allow 911 calls from any cell phone.
 
That's correct. Just make sure it is not analog cell phone.. I highly doubt you can make ANY calls including 911 since most wireless carrier, including my company have power-down analog base stations (cell site) in Feb. You would need digital phone to be able to make 911 calls.

FCC has approved this analog turndown over 5 years ago and this sunset deadline already passed last feb.

Some state law require landline to still have active 911 on it even when you close the landline account so ask your phone company about it. If you live in one of the state then a hearing person still should be able to hear dialtone on landline after cancelling landline phone service to allow 911 call still be made on it.
