Hey there, My name's Dani (hearing) and I'm a forestry student at Louisiana Tech University. I'm aspiring to become a Soils analyst and Interpreter at a National park.

So my question is, Are ya'll ever frustrated with interpreters when it comes to National Parks or State Parks, not being around for tours or anything like that?

I'm actually giving a speech to my class about Signing in a Forestry field, and how I believe signing classes should be offered here. I've been teaching myself a lot of ASL and am getting pretty good, but I would love for a class to be taught!

Any help would be awesome!
Thanks so much!!

Personally I would prefer that the national park hire a certified interpreter for the few times they are leading a tour to a group of deaf. It's ok for last minute if the tour guide knows some ASL, but really, how much ASL is a tour guide going to get to use every day?

I understand, and A lot of National parks do have interpreters. What I want to do, is be a certified interpreter along with being a Forester. Just one of the things I've always wanted to do. I actually use a lot of what I've learned working where I do now, granted I don't know a whole lot but i do know enough to use context clues and to be able to get the jist of what is being signed. And I'm continuing to learn a lot.
Thanks so much for replying!!!!

Wirelessly posted (Backberry)

Are you thinking about being a free lance interpreter? Or just your forrest work?

Wow, the deaf community in Louisiania are going to be so lucky to have a National Park terp who knows about forestry. Very rare!

The more skills you posess, the better!

I live in an area with a large Deaf community so I had no problems getting a qualified terp for my students' field trips to the national or state parks.

A little of both I guess you could say..I would be willing to be free lance but I mostly want to work for a National/State park. But if I were ever needed else where I'd probably go.
