Jury Acquits Texas Mother in Stoning Deaths
Woman Says God Ordered Her to Bludgeon Sons to Death
By LISA FALKENBERG, AP

TYLER, Texas (April 3) - A housewife who said God told her to bash her sons' skulls with rocks was acquitted Saturday of capital murder and serious injury to a child after a jury determined she was legally insane during the killings.

A jury of eight men and four women deliberated for about seven hours before determining that Deanna Laney, 39, did not know right from wrong last Mother's Day weekend when she killed 8-year-old Joshua and 6-year-old Luke in the front yard and left Aaron, now 2, maimed in his crib.

Laney broke into tears as the verdict was read. Her husband, Keith Laney, sat emotionless. A few jurors cried and struggled to maintain their composure.

State law allows Laney to be committed to a maximum security state hospital. Medical evaluations will dictate when she will be released.

In five days of graphic, emotional testimony, prosecutors portrayed the May 9 killings as deceptively planned and coldly executed. They said that even if Laney believed she was doing right by God, she had to have known she was doing wrong by state law. Her first call, they pointed out, was to 911 to summon authorities.

Defense attorneys argued that insanity was the only reason why a deeply religious mother who homeschooled her children would kill two of them and maim another without so much as a tear.

All five mental health experts consulted in the case, including two for the prosecution and one for the judge, concluded that a severe mental illness caused Laney to have psychotic delusions that rendered her incapable of knowing right from wrong during the killings - the standard in Texas for insanity.

Psychiatrists testified that Laney believed she was divinely chosen by God - just as Mary was chosen to bear Christ - to kill her children as a test of faith and then serve as a witness after the world ended.

I hate this insanity bullshit...

I've been wary of such decisions in court...it has always been controversial. Look at what happened to OJ Simpson and his not-guilty plead and how every thread of evidence pointed to him and his flight from the LAW in his Bronco which was driven by his friend Cowley.
Same went for the acquittal of the white cops who beat up Rodney King in L.A. back in 1991 which ignited a massive riot which I was in the middle of. *shudders*

OMG -- she should NOT have gotten the acquittal -- my gosh -- what abt the CHILDREN qq :madfawk: -- the SC jury found Susan Smith guilty and another TX jury found Andrea Yates guilty AND Yates has ALSO called 911 too!!!!! so WHY couldnt this 2nd TX jury find this one GUILTY -- theyre bleeding hearts that doesnt seem to care for the rights of the *children*!!!!!! i also dont care if its a "message from God" cuz NO God would want the ppl to kill their children thus Deanna Laney should have been found GUILTY!!!!!!

i dont particularly agree with the so called "insanity" defense for this defendant -- she IMO is guilty with this crime she has done against the children -- religious fanatic or not!!!! ive noticed more female murderers are trying to hide behind the insanity defense to get themselves off or get an easy sentence which is bullshit to me

Hey, look at it another way......she runs the risk of being in the mental institution for life vs life in prison with the possibility of parole sometime down the road.

yea Tousi -- but instutitionalization doesnt always keep their "patients" ordered by the courts for life -- sometimes for as little as 1 to 5 years if the patients manage to fake their way out of being under a psych "care"!!! i personally DO believe Deanna Laney did indeed KNOW what the hell she was doing to her kids -- she was sane enuf to call 911 just like Andrea Yates and in the end Yates was found guilty and sent to prison thus i think Laney should ALSO have been found guilty and sent to lock up too!!!!!!

This is what happens when people let "God" into the picture. If people would learn to not let religion get involved, they would have just found her guilty. However, they let religion get involved and decided to believe that her mind was crazy so they found her not guilty by insanity. I personally believe that she should have been found guilty and sentenced to death. She had her kids for a long time before she killed them. She was obviously alright when it happened. If I had to compare this woman with Yates, I'd say Yates was the one who deserved the "insanity" plead more than this woman.
