Brave Janet leads tributes as BET awards pay homage to king of pop
Brave Janet leads tributes as BET awards pay homage to king of pop - hellomagazine.com

Traditionally held to honour top entertainers and achievers, this year's BET awards became a special celebration of the life and work of arguably the most influential performer of his time, Michael Jackson.

And as his contemporaries took the opportunity to pay homage to the late king of pop, his brave sister Janet and father Joe made a public appearance at the star-studded event, just three days after losing their beloved brother and son.

Escorted on stage at Sunday's Black Entertainment Television Awards by Jamie Foxx, the youngest of the Jackson clan made a short and emotional speech explaining to the audience the entire family wanted to attend the ceremony but that it was "just too painful."

"To you Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family and he will forever live in all of our hearts," the 43-year-old told stars including Beyonce Knowles, Alicia Keys and Kanye West, who gave her a standing ovation as her dad Joe, 80, looked on from a seat in the auditorium's front row.

Host Jamie – wearing a red leather Thriller jacket and a white glove - kicked off proceedings with his rendition of Michael's signature Moonwalk to great applause. He was the first of many paying homage to the late 50-year-old singer throughout the evening.

R&B female artist of the year Beyonce dedicated her gong to Michael whom she referred to as "my teacher and my hero", while Sean Combs said the star had "knocked down barriers" for black artists like himself. Immediately following Janet's speech, Ray actor Jamie and singer Ne-Yo – named best male performer - gave a moving performance of I'll Be There against a back drop of a photo montage of the entertainer.

For Michael's dad, the evening's event was a fitting commemoration of his son's life. "I think if Michael was here he would enjoy the celebrations. He couldn't be here but its like he is larger than he was before."

Asked how he hoped the Thriller icon would be remembered, Joe added: "I would like him to be remembered forever around the world. And we know that all over the world, everybody is supporting him at the moment."

BET Awards celebrate Michael Jackson
BET Awards celebrate Michael Jackson - CNN.com

Michael Jackson's sister Janet thanked the crowd at the BET Awards Sunday night for paying tribute to her late brother.

"My entire family wanted to be here, but it was just too painful," she said, holding back tears.

"To you Michael is an icon. To us Michael is family. And he will forever live in all of our hearts."

The star-studded BET Awards was an appreciation of Michael Jackson, who died Thursday at age 50.

He was "the greatest star in the world," Joseph Jackson, father of the late entertainer, said on Sunday night.

"I wish the world had recognized him when he were living," Joseph Jackson told CNN's Don Lemon outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. "Right now he's bigger than ever. But I wish he was here to see all this, to hear all this."

When asked about circumstances surrounding his son's death, he said, "I have a lot of concerns but I can't get into that. ... I don't like what happened."

The awards opened with a fleet-footed New Edition, with Bobby Brown, performing an energized version of the Jackson 5 hit "The Love You Save," to raucous praise.

Host Jamie Foxx wore a red, leather "Beat It" jacket for his opening monologue and did his best to imitate Jackson's backward glide across the floor.

In addition to Foxx, presenter Jeremy Piven mixed praise for Jackson with comic relief.

"If it wasn't for Michael Jackson, people like Justin Timberlake would be selling curly fries in the valley," the actor said. "I mean that with love."

This year's performers included, Beyonce, Keyshia Cole and R&B artist Neyo who performed a hard-hitting tribute to the 1990s with appearances by acts Keith Sweat, Guy and Bell Biv Devoe.

The presenters included the past and present Uhura of "Star Trek": Zoe Saldana, who starred in the film, and Nichelle Nichols of the TV show.

The show also honored the soulful Ohio trio, The O'Jays, who were presented the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tevin Campbell performed a rendition of The O'Jays classic "Forever Mine." Johnny Gill, Tyrese and Trey Songz performed a rumbling, soulful medley of The O'Jays hits that had some in the audience wondering if Songz was older than his years.

Among the award winners, Atlanta, Georgia-based singer Keri Hilson, who was nominated in four categories, received best new artist and Beyonce won best female artist.

Debra L. Lee, chairman and chief executive officer of Black Entertainment Television, said Jackson's death both saddened and energized the awards organizers.

"When we heard the news of Michael Jackon's passing we knew immediately we'd have to change the nature of this show," she said.

"We put the show together in a matter of three or four days. It's truly been a labor of love for us," Lee said.

Sunday's BET Awards at Los Angeles's Shrine Auditorium honored entertainers for their achievements last year and served as a tribute to Michael Jackson – whose father Joe Jackson and sister Janet Jackson were very visible at the event, only three days after the death of their son and brother.

Sporting a black hat, sunglasses and a dark suit, the patriarch of the Jackson family appeared on the red carpet and told CNN about Michael: "I wish the world had recognized him when he was living. Right now, he's bigger than ever. But I wish he was here to see all this, to hear all this."

The memory of Michael dominated the gala. Host Jamie Foxx made his entrance in a red leather "Billie Jean" jacket. "No need to be sad. We want to celebrate this black man," said Foxx. "We gonna go through all of Michael Jackson."

The host closed his opening monologue with his rendition of Jackson's signature Moonwalk. "I hope I can make it," said Foxx, adding that it was his first attempt at the fancy footwork since 1983.

Beyoncé's Tribute
Throughout the evening, entertainers, including R&B female artist of the year Beyoncé, paid tribute to Michael as his father sat in a ringside seat in the auditorium, next to Rev. Al Sharpton. Beyoncé dedicated her award to Michael, whom she called "my teacher and hero."

Award presenter Marlon Wayans, accompanied by Jeremy Piven, addressed Joe Jackson and said, "The Jacksons had a profound effect on my family. If it wasn't for the Jacksons there would be no Wayans. Thank you."

Piven, meanwhile, joked, "If it wasn't for Michael Jackson, people like Justin Timberlake would probably be selling curly fries in the [San Fernando] Valley." As some members of the audience groaned, Piven quickly interjected, "Said with love."

LeBron James, collecting his best male athlete trophy, told the crowd, "My heart and prayers go out to the whole Jackson family. What they did for us ... was amazing."

Janet Speaks
At the close of the ceremony, Janet Jackson spoke publicly for the first time since Thursday about Michael. "My entire family wanted to be here tonight but it was too painful," she told the BET audience, including her father who stood and applauded from his seat. "To you, Michael is an icon. To us, Michael is family. He will forever live in all of hearts.

Tearing up, she added, "On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all of your love, thank you for all of your support. We miss him so much. Thank you so much."

Backstage with Joe
In the pressroom, where he made a brief appearance, Joe Jackson was asked if Michael might have a message for his fans at this time. He responded, "I think if Michael was here he would've enjoyed the celebration, but … he couldn't be here. It's like he was larger than he was ever before. I think Michael gives his love to everybody and we hope his record will never be broken."

As for how he would like his son to be remembered, the elder Jackson said, "Well as you know, since the tragedy has happened, I would like him to be remembered forever all over the world. We know that all over the world everybody will support him."
