I apologize if I start a thread that was already written but I don't have time for search - I am so sorry, I hope you don't mind..?

The problem I have is that my newest HP movie -the Goblet of Fire is supposed to have CC which to me is black background white letters but when I went to Setting it only says Subtitles.

And indeed it's only white subtitles while the movie is played - mind you sometimes when I don't sort out the settings first BOTH CC and subtitles are on.

Am I missing something? ist there some other way to turn on the CC?
My TV is always with CC on.
And other DVDs plays with CC no plm..

Strange! I haven't play HP The Goblet of Fire. SO I will test it and see what I see on the TV and let you know. Maybe other memebers may have a better answer than I do.

Good luck!

Did you just buy the dvd player? if you did.. there are certain dvd players that won't work with cc. if you had the dvd player and had no problem with the other movies with cc in it, i'm not sure what the problem is..

What Rebegirl said. An old friend had a DVD player that wouldn't play DVDs with captions. I couldn't tell you why it happens, I just know sometimes it does.

Why not just watch it with subtitles? I know there are perks to captions, but something's better than nothing, right?

Just because the box says that the movie is CC doesn't mean it's in the DVD settings. CC is for the television.

Yeah, CC would be on your TV's menu. You turn it on using your TV's menu system, not your DVD player. Basically, if you see captions while watching TV using that same set, your CC is set up and you have no need to turn it on using the DVD player.

That said, some DVD manufacturers say it has captions when they're referring to subtitles. Personally, even though I'm hearing, I always turn this stuff on because I hate missing anything and I like to see and hear it. I've tested to see whether I can follow a show using the text only (no sound). "Pop-on" CC is WAY easier to follow because captions are placed next to the speaker. Subtitle-style (always centered on the bottom) and roll-up (that scrolling type that is unfortunately becoming common on pre-recorded shows) are the hardest to follow. The person who came up with the stupid idea of using roll-up captions on prerecorded shows should be shot. :rl:

There should be a law forbidding DVD players that don't support CC and a law requiring all DVDs to have CC, even if they already have subtitles. Oh yeah, and a law requiring pop-on captions on all pre-recorded TV shows. :thumb:

Thank you!
I guess I have no 'real' CC then. Sure I am glad there are subtitles but if the box says CC it should be CC.

CC/Subtitle Problems

Look at your remote control for your DVD player and you will see a button named "disc menu". Push this button and you will be able to turn the subtitles off and the captions on.

We have this problem with Netflix movies and it took us awhile to figure it out!

Good luck.

Your DVD player probably doesn't pass the line 21 info (which contains the closed captions in normal broadcasts and dvds) to your television. Suffice to say, this really shouldn't happen and manufacturers should be making sure that they include this support in all of their products.

The other possibility is that they're using the strict definitions of CCs and subtitles. Technically, subtitles are aimed at non-speakers of the language, whereas captions (open or closed) are aimed at dhh; thus (at least in theory), subtitles tend to carry only dialogue, while captions carry dialogue plus descriptions of sounds (i.e., "door opening", etc).
