Walt: Who is the intended customer for the iPhone? Is it for current “smart phone” users? For iPod fans who want a combined device?

Steve: Almost everyone we’ve talked to hates their phone. The terrible user interfaces keep most users from discovering or using most of the features. We’d like to change that for everyone. Many users want both a phone and an iPod, since most phones are not good music players. When you subtract the $200 cost of an iPod, which is included in the iPhone, the rest of the iPhone costs just $299.

iPod sell easy than iPhone at same price. iPhone contract required.
Walt: Why did you decide to omit a physical keyboard? Won’t that turn off people who pay a lot for phones like BlackBerrys because they are heavy email users?

Steve: The iPhone has the best, most advanced keyboard in any mobile device. Like all small keyboards, it takes three or four days to get used to. IPhone users will quickly learn to trust its intelligence to correct their mistakes automatically. So far, everyone who has used it loves it, and reports that they are typing as fast or faster than they did on their Treo or BlackBerry or other smart phone. The iPhone’s keyboard lets us use far more sophisticated software to improve accuracy, customize the keyboard for specific applications, and of course remove the keyboard when it’s not needed, freeing iPhone’s entire large screen for reading email, browsing the Web, looking at maps, enjoying photos and movies, and doing things we haven’t yet invented. We think the iPhone’s keyboard is one of its greatest assets and competitive advantages.

I would feel funny because no feel from buttons. That's all I feel is glass.

Walt: Why does the iPhone only run on a relatively slow cellphone data network, much slower than those used by some other smart phones?

Steve: The iPhone has built-in Wi-Fi and uses the EDGE high-speed data network. EDGE is pervasive throughout the U.S., and for many applications like email, maps, stocks and weather, it is plenty fast. The iPhone automatically switches to Wi-Fi whenever it senses a known Wi-Fi network, and Wi-Fi delivers data several times faster than 3G networks. So the iPhone sandwiches 3G networks with something a bit slower on the bottom and something far faster on the top.

EDGE is no problem for email, stocks, and weather but google map and internet are not great. I am not sure why he said maps is plenty fast. I used google map under EDGE from Treo 650 and it's pretty slow to me.

Walt: When will there be an iPhone that runs on the fastest, so-called “3G” networks?

Steve: Walt, you know we don’t talk about future products. Again, Wi-Fi is far faster than 3G networks.

Come on! Wifi is short range and not anywhere.

Walt: Will you follow the pattern you set with the iPod and bring out less costly models? If so, when?

Steve: We don’t talk about future products
Again? I guess Steve don't want other business to know about beat the price.

Walt: Why does the iPhone only work with a single carrier, AT&T? Will there be iPhones for other carriers in the U.S.?

Steve: AT&T is the most popular wireless carrier in the U.S. and they have been investing billions of dollars in the last couple of years to create a great network. They also have the advantage of using GSM technology, which is used by over 80% of the world. The iPhone is a world phone with quad-band GSM technology that works great in the U.S., Europe and most of Asia.

AT&T is not just wireless carrier. They made more profile from internet, phone, and other. "Advantage of using GSM technology" why iPhone use old network?

yeah, just one button. lol

What's about 801.11n? you know N? I don't think iPhone support N? No, it said G, never mind...

Neo... regarding Google Maps. it may be the software on your Treo that is slow. Apple and Google optimized them for iPhone to make sure it is faster.

Was that Google Maps downloaded and installed right? not pre-installed or not come with Treo? were you using Treo's browser to access Google Maps, if it is the latter. bingo! it is the browser. Treo's Browser is no where faster as Safari!

It's still short range than 3G does.

Hrmmm just notice in FAQ that iPhone are 14 days to return it and 10% restocking fee if return opened.

Not much time to try it out before you got a chance to back out of a 2-years contract.

Trust me, Treo 650 and Treo 700p are same processor speed.

Treo 650 is only EDGE and Treo 700p is EVDO for wireless speed.

I don't use Treo's browser for Google maps.

I thought you knew it but I guess not.

Just download software from http://www.google.com/gmm/GoogleMaps.prc and install on it then loading from app. I try to tell you on other forum that Treo and iPhone are same for google map. You should play on Treo with Google maps first.

So how do you access google maps on treo? browser?

on iPhone it is not thru Safari Browser it is a APP! :eek2:

eh? There is application of google maps on treo. I'm talk about how fast it can done when iPhone's google maps speed up with 2.5G as I aware that it's application on iPhone.

Doh, I forget add to said.

Treo 700p is much faster than Treo 650 for google map thru wireless network.

Allright it is a app.. I wasn't thinking I was half tired earlier today.. :P so sue my ass!

anyway the app you downloaded IS NOT SAME as the one on iPhone.

I told you it is entirely different! but the map layer is same but the interface is frakking different. look at the iPhone maps demo you will see it is blazing fast!

the Google Maps on iPhone is done in collaboration between Apple and Google. As for the downloaded app in .prc format is done by Google and provided without collaboration with other company. You see Google is on board of director at Apple!

*RME*

That's why I stopped takling about maps in other thread since you both doesn't get it.

Dude, demo is nothing, I am sure it use thru WIFI and make it looks faster but what about EDGE?

No matter about collaboration. It's just software. Windows come with IE7 and download Firefox. Firefox run faster than IE7.

Mac come with iChat and download Adium. Adium is better than iChat.

I don't think you get it what you talk about since you think Treo use google map thru browser.

Again, You should try Treo first before you post.

ok yes mobiles do have google maps applications. every mobiles have different file aassociations like boult mentioned *.prc. it depends on what o/s runs on mobiles. anyway. google maps on mobile with palm os or wm are just like iPhone. it runs like regular program on mobile. no different. however, i agreed with boult that google maps on mobile is different from iPhone's own google maps. what different between google maps on mobiles and iPhone's google maps are iPhone can dial the phone # on search list when you tap on that ph #. google maps on pda doesnt have that dialing things on ph # by tapping. also google maps on iPhone does have little different stylish interfaces like red thumbtacks. we did talk about google maps somewhere in other threads. i dont understand why it is brought up again. heh.

I hate to tell you, Treo DO have google map with dial the phone # on search list when I find business from google map.

That's it! I will make video of my Treo for google map and upload to youtube then post here soon or later.

Yes, It have tap phone number to dial. Don't need to type down all phone number. Just one click to call right away.

It's pointless for deaf but Treo can do copy/paste phone number from google map to relay to call.
