Injured Teen Track Star Collapses at Finish Line – But Finishes the Race
Injured Teen Track Star Collapses at Finish Line – But Finishes the Race - Good Deeds, Real People Stories : People.com

When 16-year-old track star Holland Reynolds collapsed just feet away from the finish line during a race for the state championship, even her own coach thought it was all over.

But the high-school junior from San Francisco, who was captured on video staggering towards the finish line but falling on the grassy side of the track before she could cross it, refused to give up.

Reynolds – clearly in pain but with a state championship at stake – stunned the crowd as she picked herself up and crawled across the line.

"I just kept on telling myself, 'I need to finish and I need to cross the line,'" Reynolds told ABC News. "I don't remember falling, but then I remember crawling across the line."

An ambulance whisked her away as soon as she put a foot over the line, and Reynolds, who says she was in "shock" during the big finish, was later diagnosed with dehydration and light hypothermia from her run in the cold weather.

Remarkably, even though the star didn't finish first as she'd hoped, her time helped secure the state championship for her team.

Her coach, Jim Tracy, recalls the excruciating moment when he knew something was wrong. "I called out to her. I said, 'Holland are you all right?'' Tracy said. "She just kept going – staggering and staggering."

But, he said, he reveled in the inspiring ending.

"We won," he said. "And it was a great feeling."

that was a cool article. read it in different media. i ran CC in HS and the end of the race was always a killer if you never got your 2nd wind. eve a few feet to cross becomes early impossible when your legs feel like lead

Yup, I did something similar but it was AFTER I had crossed the finish line. I just remember crossing the line then wop, my face was in the grass. I was a HS senior at the time. I didn't win but I finished in the top 25 out of nearly 200 girls as it was the two smallest classifications running together. The course was the University of Arkansas Xcountry course in Fayetteville, AR. It was 3 miles of hell.

I never forget it!

I was one of them who almost collapsed but made it in tenth place in cross country state championship in fresno back in december 2002. Because it required to be qualify for enter national champisonship in orlando, florida. Sadly, I did not made in high rank place because too many competitions are too good.

You know what? CSUN, Stanford, Duke, Colorado State, other college coaches who scout and watched runners at this time.

Because they can offer any runner who is very good... I met csun and duke coach who impressed with me then if I would be offer to get full scholarship for duke university from cross country and track.

Wow! I remember I was only runner against one guy in 3200m at my home game, I beat him at time, many people screamed at me then I saw same college coach to hand shake at me. I was pretty good running at my best time for 1600 and 3200m in state champisonship. Even i was signed contract for play cross country and track at csun. Because all colleges are Division I required to do and get attention in media.

I knew lots of xc and track star in california I met because I went to invitational many times.
