I will be taking a brief vacation to see my family for a couple of days, because they have to work Christmas Day.

I'll be riding the Illini to Effingham, IL, and will head back home on the 22nd, on the same line.

That leads to a curious question-- how did you feel when your parents or family had to work on Christmas?
 
I always end up working on Christmas, that's what the medical field does to you. :doh: Most of my family have cozy office jobs that work Monday - Friday with paid holidays... so rarely have I ever seen a family member work on Christmas. I wouldn't mind, hey... you got to work you've got to work that's it! They're certainly not working a 24 hour shift ( Unless you're in my job where I can work 18 - 24 hours in a day sometimes, yay sleeping in the hospital! :mad: ) So we can make time somewhere in the day to include them in festivities. I'd work around it just as my family works around my work schedule. :)
 
If that were possible I would do it. Problem is, the Amtrak ride is over 200 miles, and then there's the fact the time frame isn't as big as I'd like it to be. Plus, my parents won't drive to Chicago to see me, anyways.
 
I guess something would have to be figured out. But ay some point we would celebrate all togethet.
 
In about two weeks I'm moving 2000 miles away, unless something delays me, which I always assume will happen.
 
Not with me. Already got the tickets, and everything is set.
 
I'm going to get ready today for my Michigan road trip tomorrow. I alway load up my van with stuffs that I can take to auction to drop off. Having a big van makes it a chore to load it up. Looking forward to the trip, but have to plan for it.

My mom never had to work on Christmas but my dad moved away when I was about 10, so he wasn't present for any Christmases. My brother and I lived with my dad for one school year when I was 15-16, so we did spend that Christmas with him instead of our mom.
 
I worked every Holiday there is....and before I had my family, I often swapped days with a co-worker who did have a family, so they could spend time with them.
 
If the switching problem at Union Station hasn't been resolved, I could be delayed.
 
My dad and one of this brother had their own buckle factory so they closed the shop up so everyone could be home with their families. My mom never worked.
 
Dogmom-- thanks. I hope the trip will be a safe one, but considering my Amtrak line travels on a busy freight train line, there's a likely chance we may see some delays before we get there.
