 I am losing my hearing but have a grandchild that attends a deaf school. I adore him and he adores me because I took the free asl classes at his school to try to understand and communicate with him. I also checked out library dvd's to learn asl and did volunteer work at his school. I even checked out movies on deaf culture and watch movies with deaf stars. I want him to be able to further his education and get a job. We communicate through videophone and messages on Facebook. I want to be able to get him to the proper social services that will be able to help him in the future. I also concerned about others in my state that are not so lucky in not being able to communicate due to no internet service for videophones or telephone service for TTY. Transportation and communication is key factor to getting a job. I have worked with deaf persons and they are hard workers if they can get work. :ty:

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. How old is your grandson? Why are you so concern about his future? Just let him get the education he need and worry about the employment training later. I am also very glad that you took ASL classes with him as you are losing your hearing.

As for the Deaf hard workers, it can be a struggle finding jobs that will help them get accommodations in the hearing world. If they are lucky to find a job working with Deaf people and not worry about struggling with hearing people for the special accommodations like ASL interpreters and special phone like TDD or Videophone.

Being in the hearing world is not a good place for us to find jobs unless we are lucky to find the right company that will hire a Deaf person with special TDD and having an ASL interpreters for meetings and other important settings at work. Most of them don't bother to hire us when we ask for TDD and ASL interpreters. They think it cost too much money or a waste of time with deaf workers. :dunno: That is discrimination. :(

Enjoy reading and posting all the threads here. See you around here.
