Hi I'm 19 and I love studying languages, I can speak in Japanese, Portuguese, and German. Languages and communications have been my life. But I hate the fact that I'm half deaf. I'm feeling like, wtf, I was born with an ability to learn language fast but I'm half deaf on the same time!!! I'm afraid that I will never pass any listening test. That even I could speak well but I CANNOT HEAR WELL.. How is this? :'(

I'm half deaf on my right ear. Normally, it doesn't hurt, but it's just very sensitive that every time I try to clean it up it does hurt.. If anyone out there knows what's going on with my ear can you help me please? Do I still have opportunity to be cured? I'm half deaf since I was a kid, and my mother told me I have never had any infections before.

Thx. :)

We aren't doctors here. Please see your ENT asap. I hope things will turn out good for you.

have you seen a doctor? maybe its a locust that been hidin' out in your ear the past decade and so and is causing the pain...

My girlfriend is mostly deaf and she picks up language wherever she goes. After a week in a country she is starting to converse with the locals in their language. How she does this I may never know. :dunno2: Some people are just wired that way. Get your ears checked out by and ENT doctor (Ear Nose Throat). You may need a referral from your Primary Care Dr.

Ok, first of all take a DEEP long breathe hun. Don't freak out your not alone in this ok? I know its scary and feels out of the norm but you should remember this is NOT your fault and although there is no "cure" for deafness, there are things out there that can help give you some hearing back. Your first step should be to contact a ENT, audiologist to see where your hearing is at. You may need a hearing aid.

Hearing aids are like glasses, their a tool to help assist your hearing but it can't bring it back as before.

As far as your speech, were you ever in speech therapy when you were a child? If I never had that I'm sure my speech would be a little different as well.

You are extremely lucky to have such a variety of knowledge in languages, but do not let your deafness get the best of you.

I understand how hard it is, when your job is jeopardized. But maybe this is a great time for you to do some soul searching and find out what you like to do, other things your good at.

When I was 5, I had a fever of 104.4 for a week straight, then awhile later (could be months) hearing in my right ear was completely gone. I still have some hearing in my left but I wore one hearing aid throughout my childhood. Had a 10 year gap before I got one again. I was happy, but recently I found out my hearing has dropped again. I have severe loss on left, profound loss in right. I'm actually going through doctor visits now to find some closure to why. I'm losing hours at my job, people around me have pushed me away. But to be honest, I'm finally comfortable in my own skin. I had to learn to just accept me for me. This is my life and I'm going to make the best of it deaf or hearing. I'm not going to let someone tell me I CAN'T do something just because I'm going deaf. I can do anything but hear.

I hear with my eyes :)

Your not alone.

If you have pain in your ear and diminished hearing in that same here, my guess would be you have a foreign object lodged in your ear. A trip to the ENT is the only way to get it out.

You could have an infection in your ear or a bad tooth, I knew a woman that had ear aches and it turned out she had a bad tooth. And what are using to clean your ear with? You should not dog deep into your ear.

Half Deaf. How can you be half deaf?? That is like saying "Nearly headless Nick" from Harry Potter.. How can you be nearly headless? LOL

Jokes aside.... You may have fluids in your ears or an ear infection. Who knows?? LIke others. Best to see an Ear Nose Throat Doctor, and find out.

thx guys for those super responses. I know I'm not alone. I was just so panic. You're not doctor here, but you guys have experience and knowledge. :D

No, I was not in any speech therapy when I was a child. I grew up normally and by the age of 9 my right ear just became deaf. Now it has become more complicated: my younger sister, (11yo) she just sent me a message saying she feels like her left ear's going deaf!! :( (I live in different city with mom and my younger sister, so I called mom and asked her to bring my sister to an ENT doctor ASAP)

And also I never dig deep into my ear.

Ok, It could be some fluids, locust, infections, or foreign objects. I think I need more than an ENT doctor, but also a psychologist right now. Haha. I've never seen ENT doctor before, but your explanations are so motivating. I'll do it ASAP.

ps: If the doctor finds some fluids, or foreign objects inside, what will he do to get them out? a surgery? :S

thank you very very much :)

hello. can you hear me now?

What the doctor will do about it depends on what it is! DO take care of it immediately; if you can't get an appointment with an ENT within a day or two, then go to the Emergency Room at a hospital.

Re: the languages: do you know if you are a candidate for hearing aids? Ever tried them? I spent most of my working life in a career where I needed to speak and understand different foreign languages. I could not have done it without HAs.

It sounds like you have a good aptitude for languages. Do you have a career in mind to use them, or so far is it just an academic thing for you?

no matter what he ends up doing.... even if you are not half deaf anymore, we will still welcome you with open arms (if not open ears!).

Ok, I've been trying to get an appointment with an ENT doctor :S (kinda afraid, I never before)

no I have no any idea about hearing aids...I think someday, yeah, probably, I will use HAs.

I think it's all about my future career :( and for now, it's an academic thing also. D:

and thx for the open arms. :]

Right. Some people just have a natural talent for languages. But if you are deaf, and have that talent, think how many different signed languages you could learn. You don't have to be limited to spoken language as a foreign language.

I met a deaf woman who knew 4 different sign languages in AOL chat years ago.

According my to my sister's MIL, earwigs will burrow themselves in your ear and burrow it's way to your brain.
