I am witness the repo!!! :-O

He probably thought he could elude the repo order if he wasn't at home.

Can't see why it would be illegal.
It's like covering up your license plate. Cops don't like it because they can't identify you.

If the VIN is covered up, they can't compare it against the plate to verify that it is on the right vehicle.

Of course, they can look at the other VIN's on the vehicle but they don't like having to crawl around for that.

Bingo. False tags lands you in deeper water than a minor traffic violation ever could. I believe a tampered VIN # carries the same weight in court.

Fortunately I have not been pulled over often enough to test that theory out.

The VIN number on my truck can't be obscured. It has a box around it that goes all the way up to the window and the VIN number is printed on a metal plat that's bolted to the vehicle behind the glass. I thought this was standard in modern vehicles.
same. My old saab.. you can easily slip a paper in to cover it.

well then - good luck to your friend....

they can scan the barcode off from inspection sticker

I could have a map on the dashboard. That doesn't make anything tampered.

well in this case - you're not tampering VIN # nor using fake VIN #. You're just "obscuring" it by littering papers around

but it is illegal for sure to obscure your license plate.

Besides, I have never seen a statement in the registration requiring the VIN to be visible at all times.

A license plate is the primary way of connecting the vehicle to the registered owner.

It's too easy to swap plates. A VIN is harder to change (well, it takes a little more time, especially if you change them all).

nowadays - parking police have digitized device that can connect wirelessly in order to verify a validity of plates.

NYPD has dozens of police cars equipped with plate readers

Interesting; I hadn't seen those before.

I've read about those. The readers can scan hundreds of plates as the car is driven by. Much more effective than eyeballing them.

cuz you live in red state :)

NYC is a very unique metropolitan city. It has its own laws separate from New York state. I don't like the direction NYC's heading toward to. There are cameras on poles too as plate readers. Dang Bloomberg. Is he really that distrustful of regular folks? :dunno:

Well if you're not doing anything illegal, then you have nothing to worry about.

Well.. When you feel that the government is spying on you all the times, taking your rights away bit by bit, I think you will be saying that differently.
