The Cleveland Clinic has received approval to perform the world's first human face transplant after 10 months of debating the issue.
The Ohio hospital says it is the first medical facility to receive permission from a review board to perform the procedure. Several other medical teams from around the world are also pursuing the procedure, which Health Talk first reported on September 18.
The Associated Press quoted Dr. Maria Siemionow, the clinic's director of plastic surgery as saying, "We are at this point ready to begin screening patients."
"It may not happen in six months or a year...It may not happen in our life, or it may happen sooner than you expect."
Finding a donor cadaver for the facial transplant might be more difficult than finding an appropriate patient, which could take up to two years, according to doctors at the clinic.
Dr. Siemionow said the procedure does have risks, including rejection which could be as high as 50 percent.
The clinic was granted approval to perform the controversial human facial transplant on people severely disfigured by burns or disease.
Is that Cheri getting a face replacement after putting on her mask?
