Britain's Prince Harry to visit New York - Yahoo! News

LONDON – Prince Harry will travel to New York City this month on a high profile trip that will include a visit to ground zero and a charity polo match.

It will be the first time the 24-year-old royal has traveled to the United States since the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997.

The trip also will be Harry's first formal overseas engagement outside Britain. He has frequently traveled abroad, but this will be the first time he officially represents Britain's royal family on such a trip.

It is in part intended to help ease the prince into his royal role, St. James's Palace announced.

He is to begin the two-day trip with a visit to the World Trade Center site on May 29. The next day, he will take part in a charity polo match — the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic — on Governor's Island to raise cash for the U.S arm of his Lesotho-based charity, Sentebale.

Harry's trip will include a visit to Harlem's Children's Zone, a nonprofit community-focus organization that has operated since the 1970s. Accompanying him will be Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, the co-founder of Harry's charity.

Prince Harry to visit 9/11 site
BBC NEWS | UK | Prince Harry to visit 9/11 site

Prince Harry is to visit the site of New York's World Trade Center on his first formal overseas engagement.

Harry, 24, will pay his respects to the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks and meet wounded US war veterans, St James's Palace announced.

He will also play a polo match in the city to raise funds for his Sentebale charity, supporting orphans in Lesotho.

The two-day trip at the end of the month will be Prince Harry's first visit to the US since he was a child.

Prince Harry will meet families of those killed in the 11 September terror attacks at the site where the twin towers once stood.

He will then commemorate the 67 UK victims by formally naming the British Garden at Hanover Square, before meeting more families at a reception.

'Additional poignancy'

Sir Alan Collins, UK consul-general in New York, said the trip would reinforce strong commercial, cultural and historical links between New York and the UK.

"Prince Harry is well-known and respected in the United States of America for having deployed alongside US forces in Afghanistan," he said.

That would add additional poignancy to his visit to the World Trade Center, he added.

Prince Harry will also tour the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in Manhattan, to see prosthetics facilities and a clinic for treating post-traumatic stress disorder.

A young British serviceman who was wounded in Afghanistan will join the prince on this part of the visit.

On 30 May, the second day of the trip, Prince Harry will take part in a polo competition on Governors Island.

The match will raise funds for American Friends of Sentebale - supporting the prince's African charity.

Prior to that he will meet Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, a co-patron of the charity, and visit the Harlem Children's Zone, a school and support centre for youngsters.

Prince Harry will travel on scheduled flights to and from New York, paid for by the Queen, the prince's private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton said.

Prince Harry To Take Bite Out Of Big Apple
Prince Harry To Visit New York In United States To Visit Veterans And Play Charity Polo Match | World News | Sky News

Crowds of screaming young fans are expected to mob Prince Harry when he visits America to carry out his first formal overseas engagements.

His duties will include paying his respects to those who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks, meeting wounded war veterans, and raising money in a polo match for his charity Sentebale.

It is Prince Harry's first trip to the US since he was a child.

But his spokesman warns that Harry, who recently became single, is unlikely to have time to enjoy the nightlife of the Big Apple.

"I think he'll be cream-crackered to be honest with you. "It's 36 hours on the hoof... a lightening visit," the spokesman explained.

The two-day tour will begin on Friday, May 29 at the site of the World Trade Centre where Harry will meet the families of some of those killed and lay a remembrance wreath.

He will then formally name the British Garden at Hanover Square, which commemorates the 67 British people who died in the attacks.

Afterwards he will attend a reception where he will meet more relatives of UK and US victims.

The Prince will then visit the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in Manhattan, where he will tour the advanced prosthetics facilities and visit a post-traumatic stress disorder treatment clinic.

Harry will be joined on this part of the visit by a young British serviceman who was wounded in Afghanistan.

The Prince's Private Secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, said: "Having served in Afghanistan last year and having got to know US servicemen and women he wanted to learn more about American veterans organisations and see what lessons can be learned on either side."

Sir Alan Collins, HM Consul-General in New York, added the Prince is "well known and respected" in the the US for having deployed alongside US forces in Afghanistan.

Harry and his brother Prince William have taken a keen interest in the welfare of injured soldiers.

Last year they visited Hedley Court rehabilitation centre in Surrey and raised funds for the British veterans charity Help for Heroes with their City Salute pageant.

On Saturday morning Harry will be joined by Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, who is co-patron with him of the children's charity Sentebale, which supports orphans in the African kingdom of Lesotho.

The two princes will visit the Harlem Children's Zone, a school and support centre for young people which was visited by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall several years ago.

After this, Harry will take part in the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic on Governors Island.

Sadly for the Prince he will have to miss the post-match ball and fly back to the UK overnight on Saturday so he is ready to resume his military duties on Monday morning.

Harry is currently training to be a helicopter pilot in the Army Air Corps.

The Prince will travel on scheduled flights to and from New York and the cost of his visit is being met privately by the Queen.

Bills and Harry
Thrifty Prince flies BA to US and pays for VIP meal | The Sun |News|Royals

PRINCE Harry will pick up the tab for his first foreign tour, it was revealed yesterday.
Harry, 24, will save taxpayers thousands by footing the bill when he hosts a VIP dinner in New York.

The Prince and a four-strong entourage will fly to and from the Big Apple on scheduled British Airways flights, sitting in business class with other passengers — and his travel costs will be met by the Queen.

Harry’s low-maintenance trip is a stark contrast to expensive Stateside tours enjoyed by dad Charles and uncle Andrew.

Charles and Camilla racked up a £330,000 bill when they took a private jet to New York in 2005.

And last year Andrew hired a jet to travel across the States at a cost of £118,440.

Harry will raise funds for his Aids charity Sentebale during the visit later this month.

He will lay a wreath at the Twin Towers site and see injured US troops.
