if someone ask how your service dog help you? I have to take my hearing dog everywhere as he cried and the people up stairs complain about it. I removed the words 'Hearing Dog 'from my my dog jacket as people were starting to follow me out of the store and I did not want people try to rob me. I was at a doctor office and a man wanted to know what my do did for me! I told the guy that was a personal question as he was asking what my handicap was! The guy ask me the same question and I gave him the same answer! How would you feel if a stranger ask you this question , this happen more than once. If a child ask me , I will tell them. I just don't think it is any one business to know what my handicap is esepecially when there is so much crime going on!
I hit enter on my keyboard and it posted this before I could fit my headline! I did not know that would happen!
In the first place...the dog is a hearing dog, a service dog that goes with you. Hence the need for the jacket. What if a stranger was an off duty police officer? And you did not answer his question?
He can call the police and file a complaint, assuming your dog is an ordinary dog and not certified.
Two, if someone came up to you and asked what the dog is used for and you dont say anything, the person could be a store owner, or a clerk or what have you and call the police.
Third, if you fear for your safety, get yourself mace and have it on you at all times.
Fourth...understand that there are going to be curious people everywhere you go. They are going to stare, they are going to gawk, they are going to come and ask you why you have a dog with you. Because everything with Hearies are assumed based on visual. They will see you as a walking, healthy, upright person and not realize that some of those in the Deaf Community needs hearing dogs too, not just those in wheelchairs, not just the blind and so on.
If I had a dog and went to the store and had a multitude of people come up to me asking about the dog, I would be happy to explain what's up. Why I had the dog and what purpose the dog serves for me.
It does me good to see eyes opening up and realizing that.
