How would people feel about strangers

if someone ask how your service dog help you? I have to take my hearing dog everywhere as he cried and the people up stairs complain about it. I removed the words 'Hearing Dog 'from my my dog jacket as people were starting to follow me out of the store and I did not want people try to rob me. I was at a doctor office and a man wanted to know what my do did for me! I told the guy that was a personal question as he was asking what my handicap was! The guy ask me the same question and I gave him the same answer! How would you feel if a stranger ask you this question , this happen more than once. If a child ask me , I will tell them. I just don't think it is any one business to know what my handicap is esepecially when there is so much crime going on!
I hit enter on my keyboard and it posted this before I could fit my headline! I did not know that would happen!

In the first place...the dog is a hearing dog, a service dog that goes with you. Hence the need for the jacket. What if a stranger was an off duty police officer? And you did not answer his question?

He can call the police and file a complaint, assuming your dog is an ordinary dog and not certified.

Two, if someone came up to you and asked what the dog is used for and you dont say anything, the person could be a store owner, or a clerk or what have you and call the police.

Third, if you fear for your safety, get yourself mace and have it on you at all times.

Fourth...understand that there are going to be curious people everywhere you go. They are going to stare, they are going to gawk, they are going to come and ask you why you have a dog with you. Because everything with Hearies are assumed based on visual. They will see you as a walking, healthy, upright person and not realize that some of those in the Deaf Community needs hearing dogs too, not just those in wheelchairs, not just the blind and so on.

If I had a dog and went to the store and had a multitude of people come up to me asking about the dog, I would be happy to explain what's up. Why I had the dog and what purpose the dog serves for me.

It does me good to see eyes opening up and realizing that.

Bottestini , did you read my whole post at all?! My dog did have on his vest .
The vest had hearing dog on both sides of the vest. People were starting to follow me out of the store to read my dog vest ! I did not like this! I had no idea if they're planning on trying to rob me , and I did not like having people poking their face near my dog so they could read his vest! People were getting in my space , and I was getting fed up with ! So I took the word "hearing dog off the vest , and now people are NOT getting in my space ! I have poor balance and having people get in my space does not help! When I do start to lose my balance my dog will stop and look to see if I am ok! He was not train he is Standard Poople and really smart!
Maybe people are nicer where you live and do not run into HOH or deaf peope
with their shopping carts! Believe when a 300 lbs woman hit you with
metal shopping cart you feel it! It hurt so bad I yelled out
!

If she did it intentionally that's assault. Call the police. I would have.

I said I hit 'ENTER' on my keyboard and this got posted BEFORE I was able to FIX my title!! I was trying to do something and did not REALIZE BY HITTING ENTER IT WOULD POST THIS!! I tried to fit the title and WAS NOT ABLE TO!!!! Is that clear enough to you!!

I wasn't talking about the title of this thread; the improvement you would have made with the title is of no consequence, either. I was talking about something else that really doesn't need to be rehashed. Carry on and best wishes.....

If the dog is crying when you are leaving it alone, I question the temperament and stability of the dog and whether or not it should be working in public. Was this a dog that was obtained through an agency? If not, who helped you with the dog's public access training?

Just because the dog alerts you to sounds, doesn't mean it can go everywhere in public with you. A service dog must go through extensive public access training and "proofing" in order to be reliable and sound enough to work in public.

Even with a well-marked vest, people will still ask what kind of service dog it is and what it does.

My suggestion is that you just say, "I'm sorry, I'm not comfortable discussing my medical history with strangers. I'm sure you understand." And leave it at that.
