ATHENS, Greece (CNN) -- Security has been tightened at the Athens Games after a man in a tutu jumped into the pool from the diving board during the men's synchronized three-meter springboard event.

He stayed in the pool for several minutes Monday before officials realized he was not supposed to be there and pulled him out of the water.

Olympic organizers said after the event that the man was trying to send a love message home to his wife, but the Web address of an online casino painted on the man's chest told another story.

Men and women representing the company have in the past run on the field of play, sometimes half-dressed and sometimes nude, bearing the slogan at the 2002 European Cup football final in Glasgow, this year's Superbowl and the 2003 US Open Golf among other events.

A spokeswoman of the Greek ministry of public order told CNN that the man had passed all security checks at the entrance of the diving arena and that he did not have any weapons with him.

The man, a 31-year old Canadian citizen, has been detained by police and will face a court hearing tomorrow the spokeswoman said.

Getting into the pool was easy, as so far there were no barriers between the pool and the grandstands. But this situation could be reviewed.

"We are going to put security guys around the field of play," ATHOC executive director Marton Simitsek told The Associated Press.

Boy, the things people will do just to advertise their websites!

:laugh2: I laughed my arse off when I saw that happen whilst watching the competition. Really threw the Russians off just before they were due to compete. :D There's always a chance of that happening at any venue, anywhere in the world.
At least, this one wasn't violent nor threatening like at the Atlanta Games in '96 when a bomb went off, remember?
So far, the Greek officials have had the security very high -- good on them. :)

And here's the article from the website tattooed to the tutu dude ;)
Surprise Streak, Surprise Gold For The Greeks

ATHENS, GREECE, AUGUST 17, 2004 - There was an unexpected twist to yesterday's Olympic Men's Synchronized 3M Springboard Finals when a streaker climbed the diving platform dressed in a tutu, clown shoes, and a tattoo of Internet casino GoldenPalace.com. He threw his arms into the air repeatedly to try to rile up the crowd then belly-flopped into the pool where he attempted to amuse the crowd by trying to imitate a synchronized swimming routine.

After the incident, blunders by the American, Russian, and Chinese teams led to Nikolaos Siranidis and Thomas Bimis of Greece winning the gold medal. The three countries were ahead of the Greeks in the event before their miscues in the last round.

The streaker turned out to be Ron Bensimhon, the same man that appeared at the World Figure Skating Championships in Germany this past March. According to Bensimhon's lawyer, the tutu-clad streaker loved the rush he received from the skating event, and decided the Olympics would be the ultimate stage for him, providing even more notoriety, fame, and adrenaline-fueled excitement.

A devoted fan of the casino, Bensimhon had "GoldenPalace.com" tattooed on his torso to prove that he could accomplish this feat, perhaps in the hopes that he can be useful to the site for future events.

Regardless of Bensimhon's motives, his performance may well have allowed Greek fans everywhere to celebrate the first win of a coveted gold medal.
