two people, yes that's a lot - TWO people are telling me I should choose my battles carefully ... so I am, in this community, asking you people what I should do about this deaf-can't-do discrimination?

here's what happened .. when I and my (now) fiance went out on cruise vacation last week - one we went on had to be re-routed due to the hurricanes so all excurisons (dolphin watching, horseback riding, parasailing, etc.) we reserved in advance were cancelled.

since we were enroute going to two detour islands - we wanted to reserve a couple off-island activities in advance (riding on ATV and jet waverunners) before standing in a long line .. one agent at the guest relations desk (on the ship) said they had to call the tour operator . . . then finally got back to us and said "they cannot guide you." what?? I am sorry? why not?

you see, 12 shore/land excurisons we reserved and paid for, NEVER had to have 'tour operator''s permission if 'disabled' should go or whatnot. so I immediately asked to speak with his supervisor .. came he then asked us if we have our driver licenses .. and chuckled at our writing complaints at how they shouldn't be treating us like this.

I then asked for HIS supervisor - before he the senior supervisor came, he had a little talk with two previous people we spoke with, at last told us "sorry, it's full." (full of bullcrap). it WAS available (it said so on the TV), until two hours later of all these insulting arguments.

first, why did they had to call tour operator to see if 'disabled people' (us) could come on tours .. so here now, today, I'm thinking how to address this discrimination? because this is totally wrong, we are NOT incapablity of doing anything and this shouldn't happen again the next time we go on that ship. to lessen the confusion, it's a great company but a few idiots need to be trained.

and what's funny? in the end they told us we could only pick three [of those] tours out of about 30 on the list .. that we can get on without interpeters... but guess what, one we went ahead and picked out (weren't in enegry to fight that day) eventually DID needed interpreters all way! they talked and talked and talked....we actually wasted our money. :(

(to make this a little bit clear, we did not have interpreters on that ship) ..

Well, if it's out of america, I would say, bummer.

If it's in America. You can pretty much do whatever you want. Like suing them, but other than that, out of country laws are different.

In Japan, deaf cannot drive. Probably can't get a job either. They considered us as a disgrace to the people.

.. the ship, and crew who works on that ship is under this lovely america so I believe the tour operator is as well.

so, my thought is should I sue? (to educate them)

or should I let this one go?

er.. in my experiences, there are not much they can do about this. thanks though.

It tells you of discrimiation charges and what happened to you probably happened to many.

I'll just say, the world can be cruel, but don't forget you're more cruel.

It's true, in other people's eyes, you're actually cruel to them AND YOU DON'T THINK SO. That's cruel.

..like you? but whatever, you're not making any sense - your advices are now trashed.

I'm just hoping for some productive opinions.

Yeah that i understand. I been discrimated but not on ship or anything. I am still young, still making more opinions.

Why don't you go read that link I sent you?

It has same concepts that might help you in your case.

Hearing people are stupid when it comes to disabilities and such.. if you're not "normal" to most hearies you're weird or disabled.. so i say SUE!
teach them what deaf people are and are not.
its not sticky situation...they need to learn deaf people aren't aliens... i'd sue!

invite me and i'll make sure all of my wits to bomb on their mouth to choke down. Theyre shouldnt treat us like that. Obviously that they're not exposure of Deaf Culture. I would recommend you to seek for legal advice to find it out what do they say.

According to their policy: do not discrimination. So, you have a right to blow them up. they're so wrong.

Talk to a lawyer experienced in discrimination suits. If you have a case they will foot the bill and take a percentage of the win -- If you lose you pay nothing.

Remember too, help comes in strange places. A woman I know who was discriminated against because of her sex on the job was helped by the bureau of fair labor and housing -- How it fell in their domain is past me, but it did. I also know of a white person who was helped by the NAACP.

So my advice is don't go on what seems like it should be so: Turn over every rock and prepare to be happily surprised.

imdeafsowhat, see in bold..are you bullshitting me?

Freckles, you should put in a formal complaint to the head office of the ship company, and threaten them that you would sue them for discrimination for not providing an interpreter if you wished. They should be aware of this and provide the service in advance. Good luck.

Before filing anything......what islands were you docking to participate in the activities?

Remember that their laws are not the same as ours. (Unless it was USVI & PR)
