Sorry if this is a stupid question. I have a few cats that tend to have long names. Not really long, but 10 letters or so. I'm just curious being that I didn't grow up in a Deaf home, I wouldn't know the answer to this, but if you have several pets of the same type (4 cats, 3 dogs, whatever) and they all have long names, what's the easiest way to refer to them? I don't imagine they would get sign names (though I'm not sure) and it seems it would be tedious to fingerspell every time you mentioned them. I'm thinking maybe it would be the sign for the animal and then a letter or two, like CAT, S-Q?

My pets have very short names. Always. And that I am able to say.

some of my kitties got nickname,

The oldest three kitties didnt have nickname becuase of short name. However the two fur babies have long time. Twilight and Marshmallow. So we call them, Twilight aka Twi and Marshmallow aka MM.

Hey, cut the OP some slack. Most cats refuse to learn ASL so their masters cannot communicate with cats and ask if their names can be shortened. Therefore, they're stuck.

Same here :) I deliberately chose names that would be easy for me to pronounce or fingerspell quick.

I named a dog on mine Cinnamon because he was that color. My friends thought it was very name as I had a hard time pronouncing Cinnamon!
When I was kid my sister and ex brother thought it would be funny to name our two dogs Rum and Gin as our dad drank a lot. So we had a beagle named Rum and a Germain Shepherd named Gin and I could pronounce the names easy.

I'm glad you asked. This was a distinct problem when Burple Boople Dingle Dangle English Muffin von Hurplemeister showed up at my doorstep one fine morning. You see, Burple Boople Dingle Dangle English Muffin von Hurplemeister was a lost doggie and was looking for a home. I let him in the house and I set out some food and water, and Burple Boople Dingle Dangle English Muffin von Hurplemeister drank deeply and ate heartily. Soon Burple Boople Dingle Dangle English Muffin von Hurplemeister was fast asleep in the corner.

But one day, I opened the front door a little too wide and Burple Boople Dingle Dangle English Muffin von Hurplemeister ran out the door and down the street. I followed, running after him.

"Burple Boople Dingle Dangle English Muffin von Hurplemeister!" I yelled after him, "You come back here right now!" Of course, Burple Boople Dingle Dangle English Muffin von Hurplemeister didn't respond. Why would he? He was a mile away before I could finish pronouncing his name.

That's when I decided to call him Spot. ;)
