Bill Would Impose Tough New Restrictions On Abortion Coverage

WASHINGTON -- In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.

The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress.

A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later.

"It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it," said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.

In the run-up to a final vote, conservatives from the two political parties joined forces to impose tough new restrictions on abortion coverage in insurance policies to be sold to many individuals and small groups. They prevailed on a roll call of 240-194.

Ironically, that only solidified support for the legislation, clearing the way for conservative Democrats to vote for it.

The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide federal subsidies to those who otherwise could not afford it. Large companies would have to offer coverage to their employees. Both consumers and companies would be slapped with penalties if they defied the government's mandates.

Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be banned, and insurers would no longer be able to charge higher premiums on the basis of gender or medical history. In a further slap, the industry would lose its exemption from federal antitrust restrictions on price gouging, bid rigging and market allocation.

I hopefully it will pass in senate due 2 senators from Maine know better about it.

The voting was tooooo close! Goes to show how undivided we are. Most people that I know are against it.

With good reason. We do not have enough doctors as it is due to the insurance agencies setting the low reimbursement rates and high cost of malpractice insurance. If the health care initiative is passed these problems will only increase exponentially.

Has anyone here even looked at similar systems (such as those of our neighbors to the North...the Canucks) and see what kind of problems they incur with socialized health care? Many people can't even get an appointment for major medical problems and die waiting. Is this really what we want too?

I hope and pray that the senators will have more good sense than the representatives did.

I pray so, as well, Reba, but these are politicians we are talking about.

I believe rockin'robin was referring to the House vote: 220-215 -- with 39 Democrats opposed and one Republican in favor. I'd say that was pretty close.

It means that the insurance lobby has bought and paid for 39 Democratic representatives and all but one Republican representative. Follow the $$$.

Yup, exactly....

Care to share? That is, when you followed the money, what exactly did you find? What is your proof that "the insurance lobby has bought and paid for 39 Democratic representatives and all but one Republican"?

It's public record because of disclosure laws.

The nation's largest insurers, hospitals and medical groups have hired more than 350 former government staff members and retired members of Congress in hopes of influencing their old bosses and colleagues, according to an analysis of lobbying disclosures and other records. . . The hirings are part of a record-breaking influence campaign by the health-care industry, which is spending more than $1.4 million a day on lobbying in the current fight, according to disclosure records. And even in a city where lobbying is a part of life, the scale of the effort has drawn attention. For example, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) doubled its spending to nearly $7 million in the first quarter of 2009, followed by Pfizer, with more than $6 million.

You'll find a link with the amount of campaign contributions to all members of the 111th Congress (plus Obama) who have received money for their candidate committees or leadership PACs from the health insurance industry's PACs and employees here:

I'm not happy with the fact that Obama took over $1M from them either.

My questions are...

If we dont pay for the new health plan, will we be fined (which is cheaper than the insurance)? Isn't there something in the constitution about this? What if we DONT want insurance? What gives them the bloody right to force it on us?

Once the government gets it's hands on something, there's very little that will get it to let go. Especially when this bill will give them ridiculous amount of power over us. :dunno:

The sad part about all this money spent for lobbying is that the insured will end up paying for it.

Yes, think about how many people who could have had medical procedure with that kind of money.

Not only is the information public knowledge, it has been discussed for months which politicians are taking contributions from the insurance company lobbyists. It has been part of the health care reform discussion since the beginning.
