Honda recalls 646,000 Fits for fire hazard
Honda recalls 646,000 Fits for fire hazard - Jan. 29, 2010

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Honda announced a recall for 646,000 2007 and 2008 Fit, City and Jazz models worldwide, after a fire hazard involving a power window switch resulted in a death in South Africa.

In an e-mailed statement, Honda said extreme amounts of liquid, such as rain or melted snow, can flood the master power window switch on the driver's side, causing the vehicle to overheat.

The recall affects 141,000 Fit models in the United States, where the malfunctioning switch caused seven vehicles to overheat and two to catch fire. Honda said there were no reports of injuries in the United States.

The Fit is sold as the City and Jazz in international markets.

Honda said it will notify customers by mail with instructions on how to have their vehicles inspected and updated at an authorized Honda dealer.

The automaker said that current 2009 and 2010 models are not affected by the recall.

Uh oh....another recall. Sounds like a design flaw.

Honda is recalling 646,000 Fit hatchbacks worldwide because of a glitch that could cause water to enter the power window mechanism, causing components to overheat.

A spokeswoman says the recall affects the 2007-2008 models of the Fit, which is sold in other countries as the Jazz and City. The recall affects Asia, Latin America, Europe, South Africa and North America. About 140,000 vehicles are affected in the U.S.

In South Africa, one person was killed last year in a vehicle fire related to the malfunction. The spokeswoman says no injuries have been reported in the U.S.

The company will notify customers by mail once it has a solution. For now, customers are being advised to keep their windows rolled up during rain or snow.

Oh, I understand. On the first thread that you posted,I dont understand how the water flood the master power window switch. I thought the lawn sprinkler or nature of weather, shoot over the opened window that flood the master power window switch, wet switch that will be like short circuit (blown fuse(s) in the box). Now I feel better with this thread that explain. I feel the recalls on the Fits is power window motors. Maybe poor weatherproof seals in the window motors or wire harness got cut by the regulator? Maybe Honda are lipseal about the flaw design?. One fatal in S. Africa, how about the weather over there? I thought there is dry weather, wonder how the Fit got fire in this town? Maybe Im wrong?:dunno2:

Maybe South Africa use the high pressure water sprayer to clean the FIT then fire.

Yes, I was same thing to think, why it won't blow up the fuse if short circuit.
