High heels more dangerous than sports

Health workers say women are now more likely to injure themselves from taking a tumble in a pair of high heels than on the sports field.

NSW Ambulance paramedics report a rise in triple-0 calls by women suffering ankle fractures, dislocated knees, head injuries and broken wrists caused by falling from their shoes, The Sunday Telegraph says.

Podiatrists and chiropractors have seen "dramatic" increases in chronic injuries from wearing extreme heels long-term.

Ambulance figures show accidents spike on weekends, especially at horse racing carnivals and in nightclubs, when "more often than not there is some level of intoxication which contributes to falling", NSW Paramedics spokesman Craig Pusser said.

"The worst incident we've seen was a girl in her early 20s who rolled her ankle inwards in very high heels while standing in a club, resulting in a compound fracture, where the bone actually sticks out," he said. "That's an injury we usually see in footballers."

The height of stilettos has shot up in recent years and they now range up to a staggering 17cm.

And the average pair of heels now towers at 11cm which is almost twice as high as in the 1970s.

The heels throw a woman's weight forward and dramatically increase the risk of overbalancing, especially on hard surfaces.

A male midget wearing man-heels crushed my foot on the dance floor last night. I was lucky it didnt get punctured nor fractured. Geez!

anyways, I love the look of high heels but I cant wear them due to old ankle injuries from softball.

I used to wear heels because I thought they made me look taller. One day I took a good look in a full length mirror and realized I did not look taller...I just looked like a short person trying to look tall. Stopped wearing them.

People who walk in high heels will pay for it later down the road. They contribute to back and knee problems.

Besides, I don't find women in high heels to be particularly attractive. Never did. *shrugs*

I am not surprised. I've not worn high heels in YEARS and now due to recent injuries to my ankle, I seriously doubt I could flawlessly pull it off. Besides heels always hurt my feet. I prefer to run around in boots than in high heels any day!

I have never worn anything higher than a 1 inch heel. Now, I'm not even supposed to do that. Flat shoes only.

I never wore high heels! I was not going spend money on shoes that hurts my feet! I can't believe the money women spend on high heels today! The way shoes are made today are horrible

Yeah, my doctor told me on the days that my balance is off, don't wear high heels or climb ladders. I love my doc...he is so practical!:giggle:

Besides some of these heels look like torture devices for your feet!!

I would only wear High Heels for special events like Wedding or something that requires me to wear it. I can't wear High Heels as I don't have that good of balance when it comes to that, and they hurt my feet so I only wear it when it requires me to do so. Although I do like that fact that they make me taller... but it's so not worth dealing the pain, haha

I'm not very good at tolerating pain.

Hrmm...I do wear high heels occasionally, like once every two weeks, or for special occasions. I do know I look good in heels, but...can't wear them too much. Lol. Just today, I wore a 4 inches high crocs heels. It was more comfy than other high heels I've worn before! :D
