Supreme Court Says 1st Amendment Protests Fundamentalist Church Members

WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court has ruled that the First Amendment protects fundamentalist church members who mount attention-getting, anti-gay protests outside military funerals.

The court voted 8-1 Wednesday in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan. The decision upheld an appeals court ruling that threw out a $5 million judgment to the father of a dead Marine who sued church members after they picketed his son's funeral.

The Court ruled 8-1 in favor of the church? That's pretty resounding.

As much as I'd love to see the Phelps clan lose, it's probably best they didn't. After all, this is about free speech and as the old saying goes, bad cases make bad law. It's not wise to undermine such an important right as free speech just to get revenge on some vile nutballs. They're not worth it.

Not in favor of the so-called church but in favor of the First Amendment.

We have an equal First Amendment right to encircle their "church" with our people holding signs and shouting at them.

Motorcycles revving optional.

On second thought, do those people ever even attend their church? They seem to be constantly either on the road protesting somewhere or on TV ranting.

More likely they crawl out from under a rock when they make their appearances.

Nice, there is other option to override the Supreme Court ruling is pass the constitution ban on funeral picketing.

I hope there will never be any violence at a funeral.

Same here but if aim at WBC protesters so I don't care, long as it doesn't closer to funeral.

I think counter-protest is best solution and just carry many BIG and LONG US flag.

Topeka KS is only an hour away from where I live  It was a big topic on news last year summer when it happen. Sheesh I hope it's over! I didn't go to Topeka to check it out
