Hello,
I am interested in taking some classes to learn sign language, I would like to be an interpreter. I am a busy mom to 3 little girls so money and time is limited at times. I am going online to learn all I can until I can afford an online certificate.

I am looking forward to learn all I can and getting to know you all.

Hello. You would be better of looking into Pell grants and other forms of funding so you can attend college with an interpretor program.

Learning online if you have a serious goal can leave you with misinformation that you will have to unlearn.

But welcome anyway, and enjoy here.
 
:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. Botts is right. You can not go online for certification in order to become an interpreter. You need to go to college to learn how to become an interpreter and get yourself certify by the Interpreter program (interpreter teacher).

As for sign language like ASL, you can learn how to sign in the sign language class as it is better in person than online, but if you can handle that online for signing. Then maybe it is okay, but learning how to sign can be confusing and not correct so it is easy to learn in person or in the ASL classroom. If you are in the Delaware area, then there is Gallaudet University where there is a interpreter program. Not sure if there are other interpreter program beside Gallaudet University.

I think you are correct, I will look into more information about classes. At a local community college they have a certificate class but they want to test you with their math, reading and writing classes. These classes are the general classes that you test in to take their college leve courses and are a joke as I have taken them in the past but years ago.

I think these classes are a waste of time as I would like to concentrate on learning sign language. In the meantime I am considering getting in touch with my local deaf community to see if someone wanted to work with me.

Thanks for the info about Gallaudet University, I will look into that.
