We generally get asked here on AD for places for people to go to learn sign language. The following are sites that I have used or have recommended.

ASLPro.com Home
Has a wide variety of signs in a dictionary format. Also has quizzes that you can play. They have a children's area and a section for Bible signs as well.

• ASL • American Sign Language
This site is put together by Dr. Bill Vickers from a California college. He has an online ASL university that is free. You can do the work online or download the workbooks. You can also order a CD of the website if you are only on dial-up. He also sells CD's for school groups. He has options for being able to get school credit.

Signing Savvy | ASL Sign Language Video Dictionary
You can register for free for basic instruction. There is also an option to pay for membership which will give you more, but the free version is just great.

DCMP.org :: Home
You are able to "check out" videos, DVD's and books like a library. They will mail them to you and give you a postage paid mailer to send them back. They also have streaming online videos as well. They offer all kinds of things for ASL instruction, deaf culture and children.

Free American Sign Language Browers, British Sign Language, Auslan
This site provides links for all different sign languages from all over for baby sign language. ASL, BSL, AUSLAN, Arabic, Austrian, Croatian, Flemish, French, German, Italian, Latvian, Japan, National Aviation and Norwegian.

ASL Dictionary
This is a new site and has things for learning ASL and deaf culture.

This should be a good start.

Thanks Kristina! I use the first 3 all the time! That last one though... I don't really like watching her videos as much. She uses very minimal facial expression and no mouth morphemes (we were just going over them in class), for example on the word "finish", your mouth usually does something that looks like your saying "fish". She does none of that, so her videos seem quite stiff. Great list though!

On the last one - she just started the website and has said that she will be "tweaking" and updating her videos.

I had asked if it could be sticky since I seem to give the information a lot on the introduction thread.

When I come across more website that I would trust for all ages, then I will post them. I am also trying to bring in more than just ASL as we have people from all over.

oh ... thank you. I have used ASL Pro and Savvy before. I really like the ASL Dictionary site - just tried it. It will come in handy with practicing phrases. This will certainly help me retain signs.

I have fallen in love with DCMP.ORG. So far I have been able to stream every video I am interested in. I could quit my job and just spend 27/9/423 on that site.

[27 hours a day, 9 days a week, 423 days a year] for those who aren't used to this notation system.

OHHHH MY OHHH MY.

Have found a new site: All the ASL stuff seems directed at terps but I don't see how anyone could fail to gain from it. Have not found a lot of captioning but a lot of videos have PDF files to go with them.

National Clearinghouse of Rehabilitation Training Materials.

You don't have to sign in to download videos or anything. I am my weakest at my receptive skills and I am convinced the material here will help me.

Like to know what you guys and gals think.

This site is extremely reliable. I do know of an ASL teacher, who is deaf, that makes it a recommended site for his high school students.

I think it does depend upon where you are at... I've been told that quite a few of the signs are West Coast based, and may be a bit different if you live elsewhere - as for me... I live in NJ.

That being said, I do use it a LOT to look up signs if I need one. They have a LOT of signs available at that site.

This site: ASL Technical has many signs for advanced math, biology, physics, and technology that I do not see in the other online dictionaries.

here's what I did: set Sign of the Day | ASL Sign Language Video Dictionary as my homepage. That way, everytime I open my browser, I learn a new sign.

Some signs are SEE and some are ASL. It will let you know if it is ASL.

I have been using two sites, one that is mentioned above with Bill Vicars (Lifeprint.com) and also WestwoodASL, taught with videos by a Deaf high school ASL teacher. Both sites have been very helpful so far. Westwoodasl.com has no vocabulary lists, he focuses more on grammar/syntax, and not so much on just learning a bunch of signs. Lifeprint is a little of both. I like having the vocabulary, but definitely see the importance of learning the actual language, just knowing the signs is not going to be very helpful in actual communication. I also find that I must have the videos. Books and pictures are not very helpful to me.

Westwood costs $5 per module, each module containing several videos, lessons, and maybe a quiz in each too....not sure as I have only done the first 2 modules. I searched and asked around, and both of these sites came highly recommended, both from Deaf and hearing people I asked.

Wow by Dr. Bill himself. I checked the site out and found out the university is online with 2 year courses for ASL 1 and 2. still reading...
