I bet the mechanics won't, want to sell a new or reman. complete driveshaft.

I've seen mechanic welds exhaust pipe near gas tank several times. They know what they're doing. I would agree that removing shaft would be easier but it still requires cutting some wires wrapped around end of tranny and end of axle differental in order to remove shaft.

I would agree get a new or remanufactured shaft because of balance issue. I bet the mattress wire wrapped shaft may have bent just a little. Little bent can affect balance greatly thus wearing out bearings and U-Joints.

That's what I thought so. Remove the driveshaft should less than 10 minutes.

I don't think that cause out of balance. The mattress springs can't bent the driveshaft. The driveshaft is kind heavy and very strong. Almost never will break it. U-Joint probably break it.

yep, Im not think of the muffler shops. Good point. I dunno but interestly the muffler shops always have the lifting racks on the outside, more safe w/ cutting torch. Me? no no no.
You are right abt the balance issue on the driveshaft cuz the balance weight tabs welded on the driveshaft that probaby the mattress wires chip the balance weight tabs off cause unbalance driveshaft

If you want to cut the mattress wires off the driveshaft and inspect the driveshaft for damaged or bent or twisted or balance tabs missing then remove the driveshaft for service but one thing is the debris on the floor. You need to mop out the debris. You know how much time for this job? Sounds dirty job.

I knew about it. Cuz when shaft is spinning at high speed, the mattress wires wrapped can get caught briefly by hooking on bolts or protruded parts of underbelly of the car which in place can "squeeze" the spinning shaft. It can chip off the weight tabs. Weight tabs are spot welded which sometime are not strong.

Just hard to believe since driveshaft is very heavy and strong but bent by tiny spring?

Ive seen tack welded on flat washers on the driveshafts (reman shafts)

I witnessed the aluminum driveshafts on domestic vehicles. I think its a Mustang or GM SUV. Big diameter abt 5 inch diameter and lighter driveshaft.
I have no idea if they are stronger or maybe make the vehicles to be light
weight due to fuel eceomony??

Lightweight is one thing but strong? I bet it is made of alloy rather than purely aluminum because pure aluminum is soft and can twisted off easily. Alloy make aluminum stronger such as Zinc combined with it. I sure hope it doesn't snap in half if you're towing something heavy :giggle:

I wonder in future, Plastic driveshaft!!?? No Way!! Maybe good for preventing Teenagers from burning rubbers. :giggle:

This reminded me $1000 throw away Plastic car which was a feature in Popular Science magazine back in late 80's. Plastic body, steering wheel and seat made of lawn chair. Signal lights and park lights powered by LEDs, runs by 2 cylinder engine. If you wrecked it or if it breaks apart, throw it away.

maybe, the reason is large diameter. I havent touch the alum shaft cuz I walked past the under the lifted vehicle, spotted it. Im not sure if the alum yoke is forged and welded on the end of the alum tube.
 
When I was a child and we had gone to Disney World with our grandparents (we had free passes to Disney World cause my grandfather worked there) and on the way back to our grandparents house 30 miles away we ran over a mattress on the highway, it was late at night, like 1 am. There was sparks coming out of the back of the van (I saw them), my dad said "WTF, somebody check the back of the van!" and my grandfather and my uncle checked and they had to pull over to yank the mattress out of the back bottom of the van and then we went on our way, we got lucky and did not get that mattress tangled up under the van. But it made for an interesting night! My dad did not see the mattress is why we ran over it, it was so dark and there were no lights on the highway. Some dumb fuck decided to dump the mattress on the highway as usual.

it may not have been a "dump". the mattress may have fallen out while transporting it. many novice movers, like college kids for example, do NOT secure the load. I've been on may highways and seen stuff fly out of the back of a pick up. people gotta tie the stuff down. some folks never even notice the pieces fall off either :roll: pinheads
