Help Question about 4 x 4

Phillip, your husband is right, actually today's 4x4 can drive 75MPH without problem. Years back, the older version (1980's and prior) of 4x4, which your hubby may be remembering still 50mph or less. Today's 4x4 is much better and can flip while going 75mph, old days 4x4 can't do that, have to park, neutralize the transmission then lock the wheel hub, failure to do so can do severe damage. Also, never never go on 4x4 on dry pavement, two damages will occur is transfer case and tires.

The ONLY exception is if you throw in 4x4 L then do not go over 30MPH, and even worse if you got axle locker, never never go on highway otherwise will throw you out. Seriously, if you use 4x4L and drive right though snowbank, you will be amazed how it won't get stuck. It also designed for heavy mud where you need to crawl though, 4x4L is very powerful, but designed for real low speed and extremely difficult traction is encountered.

Of course it is very unwise to speed even with 4x4 due to safety, your husband really knows what he is doing, I would do the same thing.

4x4 is excellent for going forwarding, but it means nothing if trying to stop especially on ice.

There are other version of 4x4 which what is called AWD, it is all wheel drive meaning that it will be on 4x4 all the time, no matter what. SO do not confuse between AWD and Part time 4x4, they are not the same thing. AWD can be used on highway no problem.

I'm afraid that you need to tell your hubby that he is right.

Yep you r right! :D Whew!!!

Gosh about Jiro' saab and dHB!!

I have another question..... I see there 4x4 shift with "N" too?

I have succumbed to my own foolishness.... I crashed (sideswiped) my car at telephone pole last Sunday when meeting up with my friends for snowboarding. and this happened just 3 blocks away from my home. :mad2:

As you notice in the pix below - I didn't know I had 2 cones stuck under me until few min later when I kept on driving. I pulled over and tried to get the cones out but boy... they're one stiff plastic! I also noticed my car was leaking fluid all over so I had to drive home and my friends were gracious enough to pick me up. Looks like 2 cones ruptured something underneath my car. My car was leaking oil (black liquid). My mom wasn't too happy about it but wasn't angry about it. She was secretly glad to see my car to go off to dump because she was bugging me for years to get rid of it since the repair costs more than car itself. At least I have my own motorcycle to get around.... when weather gets warmer.

Sorry to hear about your car accident, Jiro. It was nice car. I was hoping that your car is fixed as new but you said you were thinking of getting rid of it. It was nice car, tho. My brother used to have one like yours but he traded in for a new Volvo S80 car, that was last year.
Happy New Year, Jiro!

that's to shift a gear... something about engaging or disengaging 4x4.

I do have the money to pay for repair but I don't really want to. I'm better off saving it for down payment for new car or for rain check.

So, fix it. What are you waiting for? since you have money.

Very good question and very important.
N is to throw the transfer case into Neutral, has two purposes in there.

IN order to tow your 4x4, always, I mean always throw Transfer case into N, otherwise your 4x4 system will be totaled.

Other reason is to throw 4x4 LO into gear by first throw 4x4 into N then shift transmission to N, then let vehicle go loose up to 3MPH then shift 4x4 into LO, enjoy off roading.

Never drive 4x4LO when going high speed, dry pavement.

4x4 is great to drive on heavily snow and it should fine.

I have 2 other cars available (my brother's and my parent's). I won't need another car for a while since I commute to NYC everyday. Until then if I really need it.... I might get a Honda CRV. I wanted Subaru but I don't like its current models. It's too...... "faggy" for me (no offense to gay people but I don't know what other word to describe it). I like Sequoia's subaru pix and that's my style for car.

I m sorry about your car s accident. I have own 2007 Honda AWD CR-V. I love it and easy to pull it on heavy snow roads.
