Ughh.. My hubby took my monster truck (Dodge Ram with Thunder Road)
on heavy Slashing and snow on the highway last night He drove it with 4 x 4 with under 40 to 45 mph .. I yelled him that Don't drive with 4 x 4 on highway, but he said its okay drive under 45 mph with heavy slash and snow on the highway because it's will lose control without 4 x 4. He said my truck is fine?

I am waiting for my monster truck will be coming home today and test it! :(

Phillip, your husband is right, actually today's 4x4 can drive 75MPH without problem. Years back, the older version (1980's and prior) of 4x4, which your hubby may be remembering still 50mph or less. Today's 4x4 is much better and can flip while going 75mph, old days 4x4 can't do that, have to park, neutralize the transmission then lock the wheel hub, failure to do so can do severe damage. Also, never never go on 4x4 on dry pavement, two damages will occur is transfer case and tires.

The ONLY exception is if you throw in 4x4 L then do not go over 30MPH, and even worse if you got axle locker, never never go on highway otherwise will throw you out. Seriously, if you use 4x4L and drive right though snowbank, you will be amazed how it won't get stuck. It also designed for heavy mud where you need to crawl though, 4x4L is very powerful, but designed for real low speed and extremely difficult traction is encountered.

Of course it is very unwise to speed even with 4x4 due to safety, your husband really knows what he is doing, I would do the same thing.

4x4 is excellent for going forwarding, but it means nothing if trying to stop especially on ice.

There are other version of 4x4 which what is called AWD, it is all wheel drive meaning that it will be on 4x4 all the time, no matter what. SO do not confuse between AWD and Part time 4x4, they are not the same thing. AWD can be used on highway no problem.

I'm afraid that you need to tell your hubby that he is right.

key to driving better on heavy snow is:

1. SNOW TIRES! (or all-season) - the most important of all
2. AWD (regardless of vehicle - car or truck or suv) or FWD (front-wheel drive)
3. UNDER-INFLATED tires for better traction
4. most often neglected/overlooked..... your skill

when driving on snow.... FWD is actually fine... because it goes where you steer... which is why Saab can handle snow no problem. MANY cars are FWD because of easier handling for many drivers in bad road conditions. It's better to understeer than to oversteer. Although a lot of cars are FWD but they're doing pretty bad on snow because of 2 things - SHITTY/CHEAP tires and poor driving skill.

Walk in the snow with snowshoes is the best feelings than driving 4X4 in the snow. Nothing to worry about car insurance.

You can drive todays vehicle on highway in 4 wheel drive. Its the dry, clear pavement that will add to wear and tear on the vehicle and wear out tires faster. You can switch into 4 HI while moving faster then 40 mph. In the past you had to get out of the truck to lock the hubs and you cant do this whiel vehicle is moving . However using 4 lo is not necessary unless you need the pulling power, drive thru power in the mud, on ground when not on pavement. If you are ever on pavement in 4 lo, you better hope you dont need to turn since its hard to turn. With todays technolgy and poorly informed drivers, todays 4X4 is pretty much idiot proof. Trying to switch into 4 LO while moving too fast will not work and will revert back to last known gear. This should allievate your fears unless there is something else you like to share ?

Be careful driving 4X4 on snows, either slushy or soft ect.. Driving a 4X4 make you feel invincible and impervious to it but when come to stopping :jaw::jaw::Ohno::Ohno: .

So think about if Deer, dumb idiot driver ahead of you or any obstacles surprise in your way. You'll need plenty of room to stop. I drove 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited with 4X4 engaged and felt like I'm driving normal (actually was driving 45mph over 35mph limit) on snow covered road until I hit brake on 4 way EMPTY intersection, I went :eek2: :Ohno: . My Jeep slid past nearly 10 ft past stop sign. All 4 tires have deep threads. So I had to be careful when driving 4X4 with common sense.

I bought 4 new "Ironman" tires for jeep recently cuz the old tires had 15% of threads  Been nearly 4 years and 46,000 miles on a tires. My young son was fantasicated with new deep threaded tires and he sunk his little fingers into threads and said Wow!

:thumb::thumb: I agree with you completely!!

I had a friend who borrowed his dad's 1987 diesel Dual Wheels 4X4 Ford F-350. We were going to Olathe, KS from Lenexa, KS and when we were approaching Olathe on hilly road. His truck suddenly refuse to go when accelerate, it felt like it was slipping in the tranny. We arrived at one nearest store and parked. He called his Dad about problem with his truck. 15 min later, His dad arrived and took a look to find out why his truck broke down. It turned out that the lock switch on hub was turned "locked" on one end and other end was "unlocked". It did damaged transaxle and tranny. He was soooooooo :pissed: and yelled at me and my friend assuming that we mess up the setting. We told him that we didn't do it. It turned out to be a vandalism at his condominuim community area. His dad had to shell out $3,500 for 4X4 repairs

As for some SUV, some allow engage 4X4 on the fly up to 50mph like Jeeps. My jeep Liberty allows me to pull lever to 4X4 up to 50mph but if it's over 50mph, I would have to slow down to pull lever or else it would do damage or won't engage. Once it's engaged, I will have to throttle up and down accelerator a bit to get a "lock" on transaxle before I can drive like normal highway speed or faster. I remmy I forgot to throttle the accelerator to lock the transaxle, it's tranaxle gear was grinding and I immediately slow down and speed up and finally got a "lock". Accelerator feels "mushy" when 4X4 is engaged.. MY liberty have "2WD, 4 Part Time, 4 Full Time, Neutral, 4 Low" (cuz it's a Limited edition) while Jeep Liberty Sport do not have "4 Part Time" selection.

I use 4 Full Time all the times when it's rainy, snow or icy out. I know you ask why  "Rainy!!!!" because my Jeep is light SUV and it can't go up hill from stop. It literally spinning tire standing still while I tried to accelerate easy and slow regardless and cars were honking behind me trying to tell me to "Move IT!!" I had to engage 4X4 in order to 'claw' itself way up the hill on wet slippery pavement hot or cold day!!

Some SUV require pull over and turn on 4X4 then reverse then foward to get "lock" on transaxle (it's probably an old SUV back then). So you'll have to follow instruction manual.

Today's SUV just automatically engage 4X4 just press of the button. But still you may need to make sure the transaxle is "locked" tho either swerving it a bit or throttle up and down.

I'm soo glad that I didn't buy 2005 4X4 Durango!! (my is a plain o'l 2WD) It is an AWD but with 4WD lock within twist of the knob. I read online that Durango had an issue with 4X4 and it is funky. Once you see warning light on 4X4 section, you can't drive, it must be towed to service!

I have succumbed to my own foolishness.... I crashed (sideswiped) my car at telephone pole last Sunday when meeting up with my friends for snowboarding. and this happened just 3 blocks away from my home. :mad2:

As you notice in the pix below - I didn't know I had 2 cones stuck under me until few min later when I kept on driving. I pulled over and tried to get the cones out but boy... they're one stiff plastic! I also noticed my car was leaking fluid all over so I had to drive home and my friends were gracious enough to pick me up. Looks like 2 cones ruptured something underneath my car. My car was leaking oil (black liquid). My mom wasn't too happy about it but wasn't angry about it. She was secretly glad to see my car to go off to dump because she was bugging me for years to get rid of it since the repair costs more than car itself. At least I have my own motorcycle to get around.... when weather gets warmer.

Ouch, I'm sorry to hear about the accident....can't believe it costs more than the car itself. Is it drivable with a dent like that?

my car's 1999 Saab with about 172,000 miles so I'd be lucky to sell it for about $2,000 and obviously... the damage you see in the pix.. labor + parts would certainly be more than $2,000. :mad2:

wish I knew a friend mechanic around here. i'm not going to bother repairing it. it's going to just sit in my parking spot for a while

That sucks. :( Looks like you gotta find another car.

I have 2 other cars available (my brother's and my parent's). I won't need another car for a while since I commute to NYC everyday. Until then if I really need it.... I might get a Honda CRV. I wanted Subaru but I don't like its current models. It's too...... "faggy" for me (no offense to gay people but I don't know what other word to describe it). I like Sequoia's subaru pix and that's my style for car.

there won't be next time. I think i will get rid of car... unless there is a good mechanic willing to do it for free. :mad2:

Thats nothing compared to what I went though.

Back then I had a van, I was driving at high speed going over the crest, all of sudden, there was christmas tree right in damn middle of the road, I had no way to avoid that but barged straight, I just basically kept driving all the way, maybe for 25 miles, that damn tree still stuck there! finally concerned about getting fires from muffler heat.... I had trouble getting it out! Not easy! But at least I finally was able to.

Man! that was something!
