Question

I Have A Question, I Asked My Sister Who Is Deaf. Her Life Is Her Kids And Her Contact To The World Is Her Computer And Cell Phone. When Either One Goes Down So Does Her World. She Also Thinks Its Not Fair To Be Charged For Cell Phone When She Doenst Use The Phone For Calling. She Uses It For Texting Only. She Also Thinks Its Not Fair To Be Charged The Min For The Phone, And The Full Amount For The Phone. Is There Away Around This? I Thought Of Starting A Co. To Help Out. Any Input? Or Am I Just Talking Out Of My......well You Know........

Hi, First of all - Welcome to AllDeaf :)

As for going on mobile, You might would like to check it out with T-Mobile for their services. They have blackberry and it does not require the phone usage. You can also include texting as well. They also have an unlimited data for a monthly service. It's worth checking it out.

I am pretty sure there's more to it when other members are inclined to share their feedbacks with you.

AT&T is offering text-only service to the deaf. I'm in the process of jumping through their hoops to get such a service, because the cheaper services (such as Virgin Mobile) don't function well in remote areas of Oregon, Idaho, and Montana where I work.

First you have to go to an AT&T store and fight with them, because few know about the new service. Once they have checked and re-checked with their home office and grudgingly say they have the service, then you buy a phone. The cheapest one that will work for me is $125. Then you sign up for AT&T service for at least $60. Then you can apply via a form (and they may ask for an audiologist's certification that you "deaf enough.") Then you can get the reduced text-only service for about $30 a month.

The whole process is audist-contrived and designed so you will give up and not bother them.

My company is fighting this through with me, so I'll let you know.

T-Mobile is much easier for this. Don't you have them out there Chase?

My sister has a T-Mobile III and even gave me her old model II (service will cost me $60 per month), but all my boss's phones in Montana and Oregon are with AT&T. His issue (and that mentioned by ACME) is trying to get a major service to reduce its price for text-only.

I'd really like to see that door open a bit wider.

THANK YOU FOR THE INFO, IM LOOKING INTO OR TRYING TO START SOMETHING. JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE WAY OF TAKEN THE ACTION. I DONT THINK ITS RIGHT FOR THE PHONE COMPANIES TO DO THIS TOO YOU. I HEAR MY SISTER COMPLAIN ALL THE TIME. ITS NOT FAIR FOR YOU TO GO TO A SPECIALIST TO PROVE THAT YOU ARE DEAF, YOU KNOW YOUR DEAF. MY SISTER HAS TO GO THRU THIS EVERY TIME SHE APPLIES FOR ANYTHING. ITS FRUSTRATING. AGAIN THANK YOU FOR THE INFO.:fruit:

Follow-up: Thanks, Bott. Last night I visited the T-Mobile booth at my local Costco. They were extremely helpful. They have a phone on special for $80, for which you may purchase a card for $15 to give you 750 texts (if my math is right . . . may need PowerON to check it, ha ha ha).

They claimed the phone would work with AT&T's system. Sorry, but cell phones came out after I became totally deaf, so I never had one until recently for texting on-the-job. I'm looking for a simple, inexpensive cell phone of my own.
