Hi. I'm a retired software engineer and have been a church interpreter for 15 years or so. My signing skills are only fair although I'm trying hard to improve them. I have always tried to learn as much as possible about deaf and Deaf culture, with varying degrees of success. I have browsed through a few threads, especially the Do's and Don'ts threads and have variously been enlightened, amused, or bemused.

I decided to learn signing when I became aware that the lack of interpreters was a negative factor in allowing our deaf members be fully involved in church activities beyond Sunday Mass. It has worked. I am able to help at various classes and activities that otherwise would be unavailable to the families with deaf members, whether parents or children.

The hardest part is having only a limited time with the deaf community. I can express myself fairly well with sign but have a more difficult time on the receiving end... but I'm working on it.

For a start I'm going to start a thread on church and song signing, if I can figure out the Forum structure.

:welcome: to AllDeaf Forum. Just remember that we don't use religion if we try hard not to. Just follow the topic and just say what you want to say about the topic.

Enjoy reading and posting here. See you around here.

thanks for the welcome. I do not intend to discuss religion per se, only as it relates to how to translate or what is expected or hoped for from the interpreter. :cool2:
