Have deaf kids

I'm new to this community. I have 2 deaf little boys and I'm learning asl for them and I'm trying to learn about the Deaf community so I can teach them and let them chose which path they would like to take.

YAY!!!!! Welcome to the community! The first thing you want to do is join American Society for Deaf Children. American Society for Deaf Children - Home
Then contact your state's School for the Deaf....even if its far away, it can nudge you towards more local dhh programs that might be able to help you...How old are your kids? They are eligible to learn ASL through Early Intervention...and they can ALSO attend deaf school/program to learn ASL, and work on HOH skills.
 
Almost forgot.......there are deaf churches and even a few religious Deaf Schools and camps, so that's another possible resource......

We do have a Deaf mentor coming to our house once a week. I signed up to attend the Deafnation Expo in Chicago this year. We are also pushing towards a Deaf/HOH preschool for this fall. Aidyn is 2 1/2 and Logan is 18 months.

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are they both doing well with Sign and speech? Looks like you're all hooked up with resources etc!
 
Signed up for the American society for the deaf yesterday. Aidyn does better with sign than Logan but he'll get there. Aidyn can pick up a sign faster than a word. I showed his grape this morning and he's walking around the house signing grape. Lol

Shoes , socks and eggs are easy signs for kids to learn . You could buy a kid book that has one photo on each page and teach your kids the signs for the animal or the item in the photo.
 
They have a baby sin and learn app on their iPads bit those signs are sometimes confusing. I'll search for a book or flash cards. Thats a good idea. Thanks

A child's brain is like a sponge. Its amazing how kids learn so quickly. I'm glad you are giving them the resources now.

Wait til he starts school.....he'll be soaking up ASL like a maniac!..Is it an established sizable program? I know Illnois has dhh programs, which is good!.Your boys won't have to deal with inclusion (which CAN be useful, but is also a great way for kids to fall through the cracks...it also is too one size fits all)..Just wondering what the local Deaf ed oppertunties are like.....You MAY want to consider moving.......I think ISD is one of those "got a lot of fell through the cracks in the mainstream" schools BUT again most Deaf Schools do have a sizable minority of academic kids....especially early on.(ie preschool,kindergarten,first grade) There are also other really good Deaf Schools like Texas School, Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, the Maryland Schools,St. Rita's (in Ohio), Rocky MT Deaf School, Western PA School for the Deaf and lots of regional programs too.....Just a thought/suggestion.....there's a lot of options out there!
 
I had a friend who used to work for the Iowa School for the Deaf, but no longer does. He now works for the Delaware School for the Deaf. Not surprising, considering his position there at ISD.
 
His preschool has 1 teacher for like 6 kids. But it's a total communication school. I'm not aware of any deaf school in our area (Chicago)

I didn't know that. I should've maybe said I live in the suburbs. The preschool is called fair wood. And yes that's Logan in my picture

To my knowledge, there aren't any programs up there. Your best bet would either Illinois School for the Deaf or Iowa School for the Deaf. Either one may work for you.

Why are you telling her Iowa if she lives in Chicago?

Iowa School for the Deaf is on the Nebraska border, a long way from her.
