Hi Travis, it was wonderful chatting with you on ooVoo. I wish I could stay longer on ooVoo but my vision could not allow me longer chats.
If you remember me mentioning that I worked at a group home. It was with the BRAD/BRCD, it is Bob Rumball Association for the Deaf/Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf.
There is one program that I strongly feel you will benefit greatly from and it is the SILP program. - Supportive Independent Living Program.
The SILP program offers you...
Interpreting/Communicating
Crisis intervention
Medical appointments
Counselling
Finances/banking/taxes
Employment placements
Social relationships
The SILP program is strict about the guidelines (rules) of the program.
Applicant's Qualifications:
1. Deaf
2. Developmentally Delayed
3. Eighteen years of age and over
4. Non-violent for a minimum of three years
5. Must express the desire to live in the program and want to improve in all areas of life skills
You need to ask your doctor & your worker to contact for this SILP program at (416) 449-9651 ext. 142.
Remember Travis, if you want to move to another province, it also means being very far away from your mother, father and your sister. Your family will be in another province.
In the SILP program, you will be expected to be responsible all on your own to pay your own rent, cook your own food, wash your clothes, keep your apartment clean and be responsible for your mental & physical well-being.
The SILP program can be found either in Milton, ON or Toronto, ON.
Make very good decisions and think long and hard before you decide quickly.

Big hugs to you both!Big hugs to you both!
I was really happy to help Travis because I could see with what's left of my vision on ooVoo the pain he was going through.
I used to work for both BRCD and BRAD. Their programs, especially, SILP, is amazing.
With SILP, I was able to facilitate the independence of many adults. I only had to make sure things were okay and the rest was done all by the adults themselves. The staff just touched base and facilitated and did crisis prevention/intervention.
The staff are all Deaf. That's what BRCD/BRAD's main criteria is.. Culturally Deaf staff with Deaf clients.
You will find in BRCD/BRAD a lot of ASL immersion seminars/workshops... I cannot say any more wonderful things about Rev. Bob Rumball. His name says a lot about him.
(j/k)! I agree....fostering independence is the name of the game. Many times, all that takes is being under the direction of a staff that truly understands the issues from a cultural perspective. Failure to achieve independence is quite often the fault of society rather than the fault of the individual. Help must be appropriate to the situation if it is to be effective.Oh, I love Rum Balls!(j/k)! I agree....fostering independence is the name of the game. Thank you Mrs. Bucket for taking Travis under your caring wings.I'm glad that he has you for a friend.
You and me.. rumballs!
Yes, I agree about fostering independence and also maintaining boundaries during those times are so difficult.
It's hard not to be emotionally involved when you see one becomes independent after helping them after being involved with them for so long.
To be stoically- cold and be professional during those times, I compare it as being a robot.
I would rather be human, show my emotions so I can relate and allow for bonding. This I believe allows for relationship growth also for the clients too.

Amen!It is too hard not to help a person in need. He's our brother whether we like it or not. We all are the same.
