Last Friday (11/12/10) evening, my wife and I went to Kennedy Center to see "Hair" with my family. We use metro to get to Kennedy Center. So, after the show we headed back on the metro and once we are on the metro, my wife and I disscussed few thing and I was holding my iPhone 4 with my hand rested on my right leg. I was sitting near where the metro doors located. As soon the door opened, I suddenly saw an arm reaching over my wife onto to my iPhone 4 and snatched away in a split second. I screamed "HEY!!!" then I got up and chased this guy. I saw him going around and getting on the escalader and I was taking a short cut charging directly to the escalder and tried to jump over to catch this guy and miss it. So, my iphone 4 is gone.
So, I reported to metro police and they gather all the info they need. Then I told the metro police that I'm not too worry about the iphone 4 since it's belong to the company and once I get home I will logged on to the system and press one button that will completely destroy the iphone. The metro police said.."Don't do that!" So, I understood why the police doesn't want me to destroy the phone so they can track it down and catch this guy.

So, today I brought another iphone 4 for $400 bucks....sheesh..well the company pay for it LOL. So, this is my first real experience of how popular the thief want to steal the iphone anywhere in the train stations. I remember reading it 2 years ago about the increase crime of stealing the iphone by simply looking for people who wear "white ear pieces" and they will attempt to steall it.

It's sucks.... so now I got a new invention that I'm going to propose to my company.

There was a story I read somewhere else, the iPhone 4 was stolen but police quickily tracked the iphone within 8 minutes and the theif was caught.

Yes, they are getting smarter now that theif quickly turned off the iPhone. Theif will leaf it off for while for like a month untill detective give up searching for it. So, I will find out within week from detective. If he say unable to locate it or whatever, then I will send a signal to distroy it. There's a 3rd party software installed design by us that will allow to erase everything on it.

At least, you get the option to get it erased and the theif loses in the end. You win. :)

It would be interesting to see what the theif is aactually doing as well, an bonus for the police.

GPS won't work inside a building unless there are windows nearby.

Of course inside the building won't pick it up but once he/she is outside the building will automark the map. it's no biggie.

Yeah, that is true. GPS isn't very useful inside a building anyway. :)

Gee the company didn't have insurance for the iPhone.

Well, that would depend on the structure of the building. If it was entirely concrete, then yes... GPS signal would be greatly weakened by it.

I was surprised to see how accurate the pinpointed location was when a friend of mine tested it. He sent a signal to the phone via a computer and it told him where it was.

Yes, there are two method to pin point it, one is GPS of course and second, using trianglate wireless phone transmission. If GPS failed to pick it up, it will move on to triangulate wireless phone transmission. That can be pin pointed regardless if you are in a building or not.
