TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Topeka police are investigating vandalism at the Westboro Baptist Church, known for its protests at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq.

Police said graffiti spray-painted on the church read, "God hates intolerance'' and "God hates the Phelps,'' an apparent reference to the church's belief that God is punishing the United States for its support of homosexuals.

The vandalism was discovered on the day after a Baltimore jury awarded 11 million dollars to the father of a fallen Marine who sued the church over its protest of his son's funeral.

Two homemade firecrackers were found outside the church, and area streets were shut down as a precaution.

Church leader Shirley Phelps-Roper said the damage is the latest of numerous acts of vandalism committed to the church's property over the past 17 years.

If you google my name, you will find an article about me in the Fargo Forum newspaper in the fall of 2002 that I confronted one of the Phelp's boys at a protest they were doing. Seems they like to do that and draw a crowd and when one of them gets the medias attention, they're out of there and gone.

They're cowards and it's best to ignore them.

I thought we have freedom of speech and freedom of religion and belief.

one day, Liberals will make Government take down Amendment and
this country will no longer be free.

iteresting, it's pretty scary though that America is still having problems with small minded homophobes, especially in the church. unless the curch and small minded idiots drag themselves up to a civilised tolerance and understanding I have no sympathy for them and certainly no respect, it's little wonder church numbers are falling these days, catch up or be left behind.

I am not religious and never go to church, but the people who protest military funerals are not typical of church people - they are crazy.

From the New York Times: Outrage at Funeral Protests Pushes Lawmakers to Act

As dozens of mourners streamed solemnly into church to bury Cpl. David A. Bass, a fresh-faced 20-year-old marine who was killed in Iraq on April 2, a small clutch of protesters stood across the street on Tuesday, celebrating his violent death.

"Thank God for Dead Soldiers," read one of their placards. "Thank God for I.E.D.'s," read another, a reference to the bombs used to kill service members in the war. To drive home their point — that God is killing soldiers to punish America for condoning homosexuality — members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., a tiny fundamentalist splinter group, kicked around an American flag and shouted, if someone approached, that the dead soldiers were rotting in hell
.

The church is only 75 people, many from one family (Phelps).

From Chicago Tribune.Com: The church behind the protests

For years Westboro members have crisscrossed the country toting signs using "unvarnished words" such as "God hates fags" because they say the Bible teaches them to speak directly and simply. The church's 75-person congregation is comprised mainly of relatives of Rev. Fred Phelps, the founding pastor.

The group also blames disasters, including Hurricane Katrina, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and AIDS, on what it views as permissive morals in violation of biblical dictates. Members insist that their protests, no matter how insulting to some, are constitutionally protected.

They are sick, not religious.

yes I totally agree with you Kaitlin and thanks for posting that, we don't get local news from the US over here.
people like that make it a scary place to live don't you think, why they aren't all locked up for upsetting the bereaved is totally worng, freedom of speech is one thing but thats just abusing it.

Yeah I have read it. Very Sad and should pay respect for his son's death not mock him.

I agree with you Kaitlin. This is disgusting distortion of the Bible. I, too, am not religious, and one of my objections to organized religion is just such hypocrtical and distorted belief systems justified in the name of God. Given the nature of this particular sect, I know of a treatment center that treats former cult members for mental health issues I could refer these jerks to.

Things have not change much since my mother's early days in south, that is how those people lives.

That is why I don't trust the religion that much because all they do is brainwashing us and making us violence while we are not sure if God do exist.. Homophobia is totally wrong and sick, they just don't know how to respect. They are giving their own God bad names.. How sadly..

That is why I don't judge against nature thing, people's life, and other thing. I don't like to make God look bad by being immature. Only thing I can share is Good new to people and if people want to know more, I can show them bible way and that is up to them and God.

Personally, my experience when I grew up, I got a lot of hurt and pride being deaf was lower because "God is mad at you so he made you deaf." Until I entered in to university and my teacher who is pastor and teacher for English. He said that God loves all of people no matter what. I was thinking "oh sure, I am deaf that is why God don't love me at all." Dr. Winkid said according to bible, God love all world. I talked to him about my past with Christian's hurtful word. He said that they do not know what they are talking about. If they don't know what they are talking about then why do I need to listen to them. I felt so much better and Dr. Winkid taught me not to look at people's thing, life, and stuff and judge against them. It is NO NO NO.

That is why I look at few of posters and based on their belief then spoke out that pretty insulting them and can push people off. I just can't believe what they say as they are hurting the image of God and world.

(SIGH)

It's true that God DID cause/make the deaf people to be deaf. That means God LOVES them more than hearing people who can hear and speak. I don't think that God did it for bad reasons. He did it for GOOD reasons. :)

That is very nice to say that. But other people spoke like that is uncall. That is why few of people turned off and drew line between God and them.

I like your post :) I agree with you all the way.

A Private Death

Conveniences
Pete's right; they're cowards. They hide behind the letter of the law (when convenient), behind religious freedom (when convenient), and behind religious authority (when convenient).

Funeral
A funeral should not be hijacked by anyone for religious, political, and/or personal agenda(s). The soldier never went to the Westboro Baptist church nor has he met any of the Phelps cult members. The church (Topeka, KS) used a stranger's death in Westminster, MD to further their own goals. That's not freedom; that's fascism.

Quoted from the Baltimore Sun:
Man wins case against funeral protesters -- baltimoresun.com

Fred W. Phelps Sr., Westboro's founder, vowed to appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, in Richmond, Va.

"It's going to be reversed in five minutes," he said. This case, he added, "will elevate me to something important," as it draws more publicity to his cause.

Obviously, the stranger's funeral was hijacked for Phelps' delusion. Again, they did not know nor had they ever met the solider!

The judge overseeing the case was right when he instructed the jury, "You must balance the defendants' expression of religious belief with another citizen's right to privacy."

Politically
The ACLU (Phelps says they're going to hell) managed to get the Supreme Court (Phelps says all the judges are going to hell, too) to overturn state laws banning protests at funerals. The ACLU is equally vilified by the Democratic and Republican parties. The Republicans use the ACLU as a reason for people to give money to the Republican party. Religious organizations with their Falwells and Robertsons, also pander to this method.

Socially
It does not matter how many laws are made; one cannot legislate what people think and feel.
The best weapon against people like Phelps is education, education, education.

Personally
I trust a Man of God when he is surrounded by love; I do not trust a man who is surrounded by lawyers.

I can understand. No worries about them " turned off " & " drew line between God and them ". There's always open and chances ahead of them. They can decide whenever they feel ready. Of course, it's not a good idea to " wait until later or in the near future " - but, that's their choices, right ? We can't make our decisions for them. :)

It is tragic. That is why I myself have to be cautious who are teaching. Many think they do right thing from God, but they have not. They misusing the scriptures out of hates just like the pharisees are doing. They are very unchristlikeness.
