Hi!

I am going to Gally in fall! I have been told Carlin Hall is good. Also dorms are small and beds hard.

What do I need for first night then? I know sheets and pillows but a matress pad is too big for a plane!

What appliances can be acceptable? Personal blender?

The weather too, what clothes to pack for August to December?

Also I ain't a techie! Mom wants to buy me a laptop. I am no gamer and better with pc, but using a faker mouse on laptop is frustrating! What kinds are wise and poor choice?

Anything will help!

Finally, my current major is business, but I decided I want to devote my life to making education for all deaf/ hoh fair and equal in quality to hearing. Recommend any careers, second majors, or classes to concider please too.

Yeah - at my alma mater, they require all incoming freshmen to have a laptop - been that way since 2007.

Hi thanks.
I am happy you both replied and agree I maybe need to contact Beca if a laptop may be required!
If you know anything about laptops, like good brands and what not to get let me know.

Lets see... I was told the following just before I went to Gally in 92...

- the gates are locked every night, don't be late or you will be locked off campus
- there are muggings and killings almost daily on campus
- there is a mandatory freshman ritual - you must find a rat, kill it, and bury it.
- no one is allowed a car
- everyone must have a car
- you must do whatever the upperclassmen (or women) tell you to do.
- the teachers do not care
- the president of the US likes to frequently visit the campus

All of these are wrong, well, one is almost right but you will find out which one! :) Not to worry, you will have a great experience there. I know I did.

Cheetah.. you are making Gallaudet a very frightening place to be at! Lol

I'm hoping everyone know I'm teasing.
I was relentlessly teased prior to going to Gallaudet. I'm happy to pass the baton to the next generation going to Gally!

To KittyKathy - I hope you enjoy your time at Gally. I sure did!

I remember bald day. Friend of mine had beautiful, long, wavy hair. ZZZIP. Shaved. I also heard some pranks were pulled and some students were shaved in their sleep. I would have spilled blood if someone had done that to me.

Why Carlin? Are you transferring from another college? Which class are u in?

I used to live in Carlin Hall for two years and it is my favorite dorm hall on the campus. :)

U can bring in or buy small household appliances like blender, microwave oven, and coffee or cappuccino machine there. The small refrigerator can be rented or bought. No table saw!!! LOL! Let me tell you a true story that the stupid guy used it to build something in his Clerc dorm room and it set off a fire alarm.

You should be able to buy a mattress pad somewhere in DC after you get there. As for dorm life, I've never been to Gally but most dorms will allow small appliances EXCEPT for hotplates and george foreman grills.

Its a good idea to get a laptop, but you could probably squeak by using a netbook.

I'm thinking a BBQ pit in the dorm room would be awesome!!! :giggle:
