PAAIN - Eating more fresh fruit and green vegetables could help women avoid the painful and distressing condition endometriosis, researchers say.

A study of the diets of more than 1,000 women found that high consumption of fruit and vegetables appeared to lower the risk of endometriosis, which causes cells from the lining of the womb to grow outside the uterus, by up to 40 per cent.

But eating red meat and ham appeared to increase their risk by about 80 to 100 per cent, according to the findings, published in the journal Human Reproduction.

Italian researchers, from the University of Milan, called for further studies to investigate possible links between diet and endometriosis.

Endometriosis, which could affect as many as five in every 100 women, leads to endometrial tissue attaching itself to ligaments and organs in the abdominal cavity.

The tissue responds to the menstrual cycle as if it were still in the uterus, repeatedly growing and disintegrating, and can lead to bleeding, pain, inflammation and infertility.

The researchers compared the medical records, lifestyle and diets of more than 500 women with endometriosis with a control group of 500 women with no history of the disease.

Lead researcher Dr Fabio Parazzini, from the Gynaecologic Clinic at the University of Milan, said they had asked women about their diet in the year leading up to the interview.

"In particular, we asked how many times a week they ate portions of selected dietary items, including the major sources of retinoids and carotenoids in the Italian diet. We also asked about their alcohol and coffee consumption," Dr Parazzini said.

"We divided their intake into portions approximating to low, intermediate and high intake of the various dietary factors.

"What we found was that there was a 40 per cent relative reduction in risk of endometriosis in women with higher consumption of green vegetables and fresh fruit.

"But, for those with a high intake of beef, other red meat and ham, there was an increase of about 80 to 100 per cent in relative risk."

Looking at a prevalence of five per cent in endometriosis in Italy, the researcher said, if their findings were confirmed, they had the potential to cut rates to around three to five per cent - 200,000 fewer cases.

The researchers found no significant link between endometriosis and consumption of milk, liver, carrots, cheese, fish, whole-grain foods, coffee or alcohol, and no association with butter, margarine or oil.

Dr Parazzini said there were some limitations to the study, but the association between fruit, vegetables and meat was unlikely to be due to chance because they analysed several dietary items.
