Free Weights versus Machine weights

Which one is better to be used for strength training?

For strength and muscle mass, definitely go for the free weights. IMO, smith machines are best for squats.

May I ask why free weights should be used for strength specifically? what's wrong with the machines? I wonder if free weights enables you to use more muscles in the body in order to complete the set as compared to the machines.

Nothing wrong with machines, it really depends on what your goals are.

Some people don't want to be big like a tank, instead they'd like focus on a particular muscle or two. That's where smith machines come in.

You could say that free weights enables a person to use more muscles, like when one does bench press, his pectorals are stabilizing and controlling the barbell in all three planes of motion.

Using both, free weights and smith machines, is even better. Free weights in the beginning if you want to increase strength and muscle mass, then smith machines at the end to add some volume. And for safey reasons, too, when your muscles are fatigued.

Hope I make sense here. ;)

My cousin is a correctional guard and there are no lift weighting equipment.
The inmates still get big and strong through bodyweight excersices, Just do calithensics all day every day. They are physically fit but they do not push their bodies past the limits. They work with their bodies and rest then go back to doing calithensics. The body builds the muscles itself. The inmates only eat what is healthy off their trays. No junk food.

Yep. I agree 100% with you. Been there and done that. I did powerlifting in my day (two plus decades ago) and believe me there was no subsitute for free weights.
