Food or rent ?

I have a job but if I had to live alone, I would barely have enough money left over for food after rent and utilities due to the high cost of living here. I could forget about buying a house on my own unless I worked 2 full time jobs. Yes, millions have jobs but if the job salary is not keeping up with the cost of living in a particular area, then what can people do?

Then, don't live in a luxury home. Live in an ugly and cheap home, so this way people could afford to feed themselves and their families.

If, I were in their shoes - I would chose an ugly and cheap home instead of livin' in a luxury home.

:ty: It would be easier on the families who couldn't afford. I am aware of that many people would depend on the food to live, especially children. I hate to see children to go to bed hungry.

The cheaper places they can rent/buy :

Tent
Trailer
Mobile home
Low income housin'

And, all that kind of things.

Same here. Rent is ALWAYS #1 priority for me, first I pay the rent, then I pay my important bills first (electricity and water) and then my not as important bills 2nd (phone, internet, etc)...I fortunately have food stamps so I don't have to worry about food for the time being, as I am going back to school soon.
I pay the living expenses first. So Rent payment is first thing in the order of living expenses list and non-living expenses last...

Where did I say that I wanted to live in a luxury home? AS for ugly cheap homes, they are usually in gang invested or drug invested areas. Nah, I would rather live with roommates in a decent neighborhood just as I did for the past 6 years before I married my husband. It worked just fine. I would rather have roommates than put my kids in any danger.

I am just givin' some ideas in general. Of course, I know you didn't say about luxury home. :)

Livin' with roommates in a decent neighborhood is a good option as well. ;)

Speakin' of gang invested or drug invested areas : I know that part, but they have their roofs over their heads to keep them dry and warm. Gang and drug are somethin' else. :)

Oh..I thought u were referring to me. My apologies for reading u wrong. Weird thing about here in this area is that a house in a bad neighborhood is around 150K while the exact same house with the same square footage and everything else in a decent neighborhood goes for 300K. I discovered that and thought that was a rip off!

Nah, that's okay. That's about the half price off. I think that's dishonesty business. :ugh3:

Fact if you invested cheap a house nearby bad area.. hard to sell and get good invest the house.
I'd rather good invest a house where closer to Mall , hosptial, and good neighboured nearby to scrubs area. That where I bought a house 150k and closer to Mall and access to my hubby work closer to.. Pretty good invest excellence neighbours.
I do agree w/Shel's comment.. where find suitable area and reasonable the price... depend area. Isn't easy for everyone who want buy nice house and good invest it.

I know. It depends on people's income...followin' job's salary or government's such as welfare, SS incomes, etc., etc. I know it is very hard. We don't live like a fairy tale princes/or princesses.

Always pay the rent at all times.

You can get food from the church or local charities but you do not want to sleep on a park bench in the middle of the wintertime. When I was younger and more inexperienced at living on my own. I made the mistake of not paying rent and getting food. I ended up on the street for a while. That was over 10-15 years ago. I never forgot that and always pay the rent at all times. I do think NYC local government needs to really stop ripping off people with the rent money. There ought to be a fixed rent rate this way more people do not have to pay for more rent than they make at work.

Yup, Depends location where the states.. As same Canada does have some provinces are vary the location may have good reasonable price espically in Toronto, Ontario.. way way way frigg'n nuts the amount of high living and foods too.. When I was pay visit in Toronto where I born raised and lived there before and read the newspaper.. My jawbone went wider and shocked about this place went way way way... highest the price living cost house or rent place to stay...

Thank God, I don't live there anymore...
but... already miss my ol'e buddies who live out there... One day, I will see them again...

About 10 or so years ago, I remember reading in the newspaper about a single mom of 3 kids who was working 2 jobs just to pay for her rent, electricity, and other basic needs. She would bring her kids with her to her night job and have them sleep in the car cuz she couldnt afford a babysitter and someone found the kids and called child protective services on her. Now, my question is...should the mother quit 1 job and risk losing the roof over their heads or bring the children with her to work? She was like making minimum wage at both jobs and that area where she lived in, rent was very high. I remember that she did try for govt sponsored housing but the waiting list was so long.

Aw - that's soo hard. I know it is no fair. But, there's some churches nearby she can find and request for someone who is willin' to babysit her kids. There's no charge unless, if the babysitter don't mind the mother to pay low like maybe 20 dollars a week ? Or somethin' like that. Both of them can work it out. Churches have their ways to help people like this kind of situation. :)

Yup... I don't want live in ghetto of Baltimore with bunch of housing project.

Five years or more on the waitin' list ? Not Alaska that I know of and Alaska is under the United States of America.

Read my post again. I said "can be as long as 5 years or even more".

Not all places have 5 years or more on waiting lists...it differs from state to state depending on availablity.

Property values.

Shitty neighborhood = lower property values.

She should have asked for help with finding affordable childcare. I think there are programs that provide very cheap or free childcare for low income single mothers.
