Federal ban on gay men's blood donation to be reconsidered

actually - better testing methods is a much more cost-effective measure to combat against AIDS. That way - it will significantly reduce the spread of AIDS and eventually will lead to reducing # of walking HIV-infected people

I know what you are saying, but if there was a cure ... there would be NO # of walking HIV infected people.

Let me follow your logic.

Your child is going to either die from anemia, has a critical infection, or whatever. You can extend the time before his/her death due to the available blood.

You have the choice to choose potentially infected blood with a 99.99% guarantee rate of no issues after a slew of tests (electrophoresis passed, usable).

Are you saying you would rather not give him the blood due to the 0.01% chance of infection and let him die sooner?

Almost nothing in life is guaranteed 100%, TXgolfer. Almost all the things you do everyday in daily life is not 100% guaranteed.

Not sure where you got that.......Of course I ok the transfusion. You apparently misread my posts or confused my posts with someone.

good luck coming up with cure for AIDS. It's much harder than putting a man on Mars.

If they have stringent screening process, no problem.

we were asking ..... if you had the choice of which region you could pick blood from, which region would it be?

Would it be from a region with a very high AIDs rate, or a region with a very low AIDs rate

I thought I saw you mention that there is always "mistake". Or, that's what you told me to look up after I mentioned types of tests available out there

I know, a friend's father works in that field specifically (He was head of the NIH team trying to find a cure).

ok, think ... suppose the one who gets the blood is a tattoo artist. He infects his clients?

Or a heroin user .....

that is how one bad bag of blood can infect more than just one person. Then those whom become infected, infect others and so on.

so don't get a tattoo then. don't have a sex with anybody then.

beside... E. Coli. it's much more serious.

still doesn't matter. as long as it has stringent screening process... fine with me. Beside - why would I fly to other country for a blood transfusion? Makes no sense.

If there was a cure, how long would it last? Don't HIV strains change quickly?

It's not the different strains of HIV (there's only 2 to my knowledge).

It's due to HIV's ability to pass as asymptomatic in most people's lifetimes without showing any chronic signs, and then all of the sudden it goes downhill.

Due to the way they latch in the cell structures and use reverse transcription, that's why it's deadly.

But if there was a cure, it'd be great because it got somewhere. Others will improve on it.

Yup, it is worse as AIDS does and I know about some people had e. Coli, it wasn't fun or enjoyable.

but hospital never ask you for choice, I doubt that they will question you.

*faceplam* nobody thinks you actually get that choice. It's a hypothetical.

See in this case.....given what Jiro said about Las Vegas.....I pick the blood from Boise. Why? Less risk given the examples. Jiro on the other hand has said he would take either.

I enjoy life too much. WHEN given a choice like this I would always choose the LEAST risk. Even if we are just talking about .01% vs. .011%

I wasn't the one who asked the question ... I was the one explaining to you what was being discussed.

Do all medical facilities follow the same protocol?

exactly! from scientific viewpoint, HIV/AIDS is an incredibly amazing thing. It's extremely adaptive and intelligent. IMO - it's pointless to continue finding cure for it.

All the money and time spent on finding cure.... imagine if you put that same amount on better screening tool. Imagine the result! You could use a home device to perform a quick "few-minutes" blood test on him/her before engaging in sex..... just like the one that a diabetic person uses on daily basis.
