TheStar.com | GTA | Fatal stabbing of deaf man results in 11-year jail term
A Brampton man has been given an 11-year prison sentence for his role in the slaying of a deaf man.
In November, the jury found Anthony Medwid, now 20, not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter in the March 23, 2007, killing of Brian Wainman.
Justice Bonnie Wein handed down the sentence yesterday, saying forensic evidence satisfied her beyond a reasonable doubt that an intoxicated Medwid had repeatedly stabbed Wainman.
Medwid had testified that his co-accused, Corey Martin, was the man who killed Wainman, a man neither knew before that night.
"I find that while drunk, Mr. Medwid stabbed Mr. Wainman and cut his neck," Wein said. "He was assisted by Mr. Martin in this assault."
She said Medwid didn't intend to commit murder because he was intoxicated.
Medwid told the court he was "very sorry and very remorseful" for what happened.
"I just wish for this all to be over," he said.
Martin pleaded guilty last September to second-degree murder. He is serving a life sentence with no parole for a minimum 13 years.
Medwid was given credit for 50 months of pre-trial custody, but must still serve six years and 10 months in a federal prison.
Wainman's father, Corbett Wainman, told court last month that the death of his hearing-impaired son has left "a silence" in his life.
"Never hearing his voice again has created silence in my life," Corbett said in his victim impact statement. "I sometimes feel as if I'm hearing impaired. ... All I have his my memories. ... Late at night the silence is deafening."
Wainman, 27, was stabbed 11 times in his neck, face and chest, including two wounds to his heart. His facial bones were crushed and his throat was sawed.
