Eradicating deafness

The school for the deaf is being phased out," he says. "Children (with implants) they get better incomes when they graduate, they get higher levels of learning, they integrate into society."

I would love to see the statistics on that.

I don't know why everyone is *aghast* over this. They have been trying to eradicate deafness ever since the CI's came out.

I think they've been doing that much longer than CIs have been around.

well, I am not surprised at what humanity can do to each other, but still disgusted/ashamed with what has been done/is being done at times.

AGREE, deafskeptic, there are many genocides, U.S. history books don't always or even often - unless it's changed - tell.

The sad thing is that this type of thinking is what is taught to most hearing children, I think. Having once been hearing, I know that the deaf community is often represented incorrectly to the hearing world. Often, I don't think it's so much a desire to be rude and just plain hurtful, but ignorance. If, as a child, you are taught that hearing is the only way to be whole, then you are not likely to understand why deaf parents aren't always in a hurry to CI their deaf babies. Becoming deaf myself has opened my eyes on a number of levels. Ignorance and lack of experience with the deaf community, however does not excuse a doctor, who should know better about the people he is trying to 'help'.

He's naive that's all....he thinks that some hearing= end of Deaf culture.
Guys like this thought that deaf culture would be ended by hearing aids etc.
Lots of hoh folks are cultureally deaf........
and not everyone can take advantage of good schools or have the advtnage of middle class or rich families..........the doc is prolly a charter AG Bad memebr

shit hard to believe such lack of understanding, so much for "
"disability"

"Eradicating deafness?" That's quite insulting and quite disgusting!

Shit like this makes me ill.

This man shouldn't be a doctor at all.

And I have a CI. I chose it. I still wear it. I am still Deaf. I still use ASL and will always use it. I still socialize with other Deaf people. My fiance is Deaf. We have pride. Our Deaf culture and ASL is not going to disappear, no matter what kind of technology comes out. It's not technology that hurts Deaf culture, but rather the such ignorant people like this so-called "doctor".

This man knows NOTHING about Deaf people, and therefore he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a Deaf person at all, ever. Actually, he shouldn't even be allowed anywhere near ANY patient, Deaf or hearing. He is NOT QUALIFIED, no matter how many degrees he gets from any medical school. He is nothing but a dumbass.

Excuse me, I got to go throw up now. *retches* :barf:
