I hope this thread is right...

I am curious abt electirc/gas scooter... Which one is better?

It depends on what you need or want it for. If youre just making quick trips with it, i would assume that electric would suit you fine, however if you plan to take it further distances you might want to consider gas.

In respect to gas scooters, you need to be aware of the laws regarding licensing depending on the size of the engine. I believe they can be as powerful as 250cc. Most states will tolerate up to 50cc before you have to go through the licensing hoops... Again check the laws where you live.

Yup, even mini bike, like you seen these small crotch rockets or fake chopper with small motor in it.... IS illegal up here in New Yawk state! You can get caught and recieve tickets for this!

If you really want to save $ on gas, best is to get real bike, they last much longer than scooters and you could be hitting 70 MPG depending on which motorcycles. My goldwing I can hit 50mpg if I go slow like 50mph all the time, but generally get 42mph cause I tend to cruise around 80mph.

If still afraid of motorcycles, then opt for smallest Honda, they have been known to have the highest MPG rating of all makes!

I was wondering about durability of scooters. So, they don't last long? Like how long? What is the biggest problem? The engine or just wear and tear in general?

I have been thinking about ways to reduce gas consumption workwise...and I was thinking about scooters...

Electric stand up scooters have a pretty good range of up to 20 miles on a charge. There's a nice one that has 2 electric motors totalling 750 watts that has enough power to go up at a ... I forget how much percent grade carrying a 250 lb person max. It has brake regenerating power loss from the batteries if you go down hill or something. It's good for short trips like to the stores or schools. You won't worry about oil changes, pollution, etc from the gasoline engine.

When I get it, my trike is gonna give me 35 to 40 mpg.....

Since the motor on scooter is very small, and they don't last long. I had one years ago and discovered that it last only 10k miles at best! Tires worn out faster because of its size and they aren't cheap to replace.
Im not saying that Scooter is bad, it is ideal if your doing alot of short distance traveling and within city. But on the main road and highway they aren't as good as regular bike, especially safety issues where you can't go any faster than most cars goes.

Yea, BUT BUT, using electricity does NOT mean your reducing the pollution! Where do you think electrity comes from? Of course coal, oil, natural gas, etc. And they do pollute anyway! And you'd still be paying electricity to recharging the battery. I don't know the cost, but I believe still probably cheaper than gasoline anyway. I do not know how long it would last, and maintenace, I don't know exactly.

Sounded right for goldwing trikes. But FYI the faster you go, the more gas it would drink per miles! I have tested it, and I couldn't believe that I get only 28 MPG after going 100mph alot on single tank (done 112mph, damn its nice!). Now Im slowing down because I wanted to save gas, so Im around 42mpg at most.

It still reduces pollution because it does not emit pollution, it's zero emission vehicle. A gas scooter will emit pollution. I do know that electricity comes from generating stations. Not all electricity cause pollution. Electric operation is cheaper than gasoline, except for the expensive batteries.

Umm, ok, I will have to check my state law abt electric scooter... I need it for commute to work (very close from home to Gallaudet), so electric scooter is better? I did take look some scooter on eBay and most of them said the weight capacity is 300 lbs? Is it true? Myself 250 lbs... Also which better 600 watts or 750w?

Gas, electric is for wusses

I pray tell what you going to do when you can't get gas?

Yep, be a wuss and use electric...I rest my case... :D

It usually depends on how you handle it and treat it. If you abuse it, turn too much... too hard, hit a lot of bumps, and don't get it tuned up as often as you should... it could go bad.

No, it does not really redce the pollution because still you need electricity to recharge the batteries. These electricity has to be generated somehow, and mostly are by coal, and coal is far filthiest polluter than gasoline!!! You don't notice because the power plant is much of distant view anyway. It causes acid rain!, and about batteries, it does not have forever life, and it has to be disposed of... with dangerous chemicals, whadda think they are doing with it?
The concept of electric powered vehicle started back in 1890, over 115 years ago! It never made into mainstream for several factors.

How do you REALLY know that it is cheaper to run on electricity? Its very hard to gauge, wheather its cheaper or not.

Hey!!! didn't you all know about "Segway" scooter? There have been recalls, and government decided it is not worth the hassles with these so called segway scooters! Post office quit place orders on these scooter... Reason? too costly, and unrealiable!

Ummm...I've seen clips of them. What an interesting concept! Doesn't surprise me there are problems with them. Higher prices is another problem with any new product especially when there is no competition.

What I never could figure out is why anybody would want one as they don't go that fast. Plus, you would be standing the entire time too!

You sure are stuck in East US electricity power. Washington state's electricity mostly comes from hydroelectric dams and some wind power. California's electricity mostly come from solar, wind and some hydroelectric dams. Nuclear and coal power plants are a rare sight in the West.

How do I know that recharging batteries are cheaper because they only cost pennies compared to a few dollars to refuel a gas tank.

Recharging batteries 1,000 times or so is like putting about up to 20,000 miles on the electric scooter compared to 10,000 miles on the gas scooter that someone mentioned in the thread.

I'd like to end the discussion, thank you!

Where I live at the condo area, these Scooters
from Pep Boys store are pretty popular (sit down type
the ones look like mini-motorcycle that does NOT
require license plates !) people use scooters locally
around here from their condo unit toward the pool/tennis
and other stores nearby.

P.S. I agree that I do NOT like Segway too much because
you have to stand up all the times. Other kinds of
Scooters are better.
