MELBOURNE: Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage.

Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin.

The link was discovered by Oxford University scientists who used memory tests, physical checks and brain scans to examine 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87.

When the volunteers were retested five years later the medics found those with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 were also the most likely to have brain shrinkage. It confirms earlier research showing a link between brain atrophy and low levels of B12.

Brain scans of more than 1,800 people found that people who downed 14 drinks or more a week had 1.6% more brain shrinkage than teetotallers. Women in their seventies were the most at risk.

Beer does less damage than wine according to a study in Alcohol and Alcoholism.

Researchers found that the hippocampus-the part of the brain that stores memories - was 10% smaller in beer drinkers than those who stuck to wine.

And being overweight or obese is linked to brain loss, Swedish researchers discovered. Scans of around 300 women found that those with brain shrink had an average body mass index of 27 And for every one point increase in their BMI the loss rose by 13 to 16%.

More proof of eating meat is good for your brain

That explains why all the vegetarians I know are airheads. ;)

So, the only thing vegetarians need to take is vitamin B12? What about omega-3 acids (specifically DHA/EPA)?

Interesting that it noted that every point increase in BMI (body mass), the loss increases by up to 16%.

It's no wonder many Americans are becoming dumber. ;-)

Actually, here's a link to a study which says the complete opposite, with studies collated over 20 years with 8000 test subjects. There is a significant points difference with vegetarians having higher IQ test scores by 5 points. It also suggests that more intelligent children are more likely to become vegetarian later in life.

This does not link back to the study. It links to a description of the study. Therefore, it cannot be used to substantiate anything.

That's not true. Many vegetarians that I met are really healthy and smart even they are 60 years old.

The information does not show the fact because it is from another country which is not the same in our country. Some countries have some dark sides that they don't tell the story because they are paid to tell the story by U.S.A. food industries for instance.

For example, some people have stress in some environment places such as pollution air, poor diet, poor water system, etc. They get used these environments everyday.

Many towns contain Fluoride which is NOT good for our health, but why it is necessary for us to drink this Fluoride water which is not part of our food. Right? Why can't we use a toothpaste with Fluoride instead of Fluoride liquid water?

ahh, Red wine is better than a beer because of healthy antioxidants. Beer makes your blood thinner which is good, but your brain is out of control if too much drinking (not related to the law, okay). Burp! Excuse me...

No kidding? Where is the link to the first study, and how do you find it? I am computer-challenged, lol.
I would think, though, that using only 107 test subjects hardly substantiates anything, while the study in the link I provided used 8000 test subjects.
I dunno, though.
In the first link there are the statements "Beer does less damage than wine according to a study in Alcohol and Alcoholism" and "Researchers found that the hippocampus-the part of the brain that stores the memories-was 10% smaller in beer drinkers than those that sticks to wine." Huh???
Anyway, an interesting thread.

Everyone's brain needs complex proteins and fats to develop properly, no matter what country you are from.

Don't know where the link is. I searched the linked site,a nd couldn't find it, either. Not good.

Sample size does affect external validity, depending upon other demographics and method design. There are cases where a study using 107 participants, is more valid than one using 8,000, depending upon selection, assignment, control of extraneous variables, and sample demographics. That is why I prefer to read the actual research report, rather than someone else's interpretation.

And, the alcohol in beer and the alcohol in wine is the same chemical compound. The alcohol itself will produce the same effects, no matter what form it is.

Amazing! I haven't meet anyone who is over 30 years old who are vegetarians. Usually under 30s who are slim and hotties.

:wtf: This also sounds totally mislead to me. Did you know vegtables also contain naturally occirring fluoride? Hell, we're exposed to all kinds of crap - whether in the air, water, or food we eat. The only thing we can do is keep our antioxidant consumption levels up.
