Driver blinded by sun hits deaf pedestrian in Cedar Rapids | Eastern Iowa News Now

Sunlight blinded a Cedar Rapids driver Monday, causing her to hit a pedestrian, police said.

Emergency responders were called just before 6:30 p.m. to the intersection of E Avenue and 10th Street NW when the collision was reported. Police said a westbound PT Cruiser hit Duane Imoehl, 47, of Cedar Rapids, as he was crossing E Avenue NW.

Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Imoehl is deaf and did not see the vehicle before he crossed at the corner. He was not in a crosswalk.

Imoehl was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, but was not listed as a patient there Tuesday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police were unsure about the severity of his injuries.

No charges were filed against the driver of the vehicle, Jenna Harris, 24, of Cedar Rapids, police said.

Thanks to this site, it is now international news. :hmm:

Wirelessly posted (sent from a smartphone. )

Act of mother nature. Shit happens.

Use the damn sun-visor!

Not when the sun is about to set and the road is oriented exactly toward the sun. That happened to me and I almost ran the red light as I couldn't see the color of the light. That is how bad it was.

A dirty windshield makes it worse.

I know what he'll say...

Easy. Just take off the sunglasses.

too late. already hit a person as he took off his sunglasses.

same thing with sun visor and putting on sunglasses :cool2:

I've had many almost mishaps myself....(mostly for dogs)....here in Florida we have very bright sun....never leave the house without my sunglasses, tho'...my eyes are light sensitive/

I can see how that would happen. Like Buffalo said, when the sun sets, it can be quite hard on your eyes.

The morning sun can be blinding as well. This morning I drove over narrow roads in the country, and when the sun is directly over the hood, I cannot see ANYTHING at all. I drive slowly then, but dang, what if there was something in front of me? Truly blinding and a bit vexing.

What about the drivers with super high beam headlights driving in the opposite direction? I hate that.

Oh yeah. If you are unfortunate enough to catch the full blast in your eyes, you are blind as a bat for quite a few seconds.
I've always thought that driving on roads is like medieval jousting. Kind of nutty, when you think about it.
